His most acclaimed roles include:\u00a0Stephen Hawking<\/a> in the BBC drama\u00a0Hawking<\/a><\/em> (2004);\u00a0William Pitt<\/a> in the historical film\u00a0Amazing Grace<\/a><\/em>(2006); the protagonist Stephen Ezard in the miniseries thriller\u00a0The Last Enemy<\/a><\/em> (2008); Paul Marshall in\u00a0Atonement<\/a><\/em> (2007); Bernard in\u00a0Small Island<\/a><\/em> (2009); and\u00a0Sherlock Holmes<\/a> in the modern BBC adaptation series\u00a0Sherlock<\/a><\/em> (2010). He will also be the voice of Smaug the Dragon in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.<\/p>\n

In February 2011, he starred in Danny Boyle<\/a>‘s stage adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein<\/a><\/i> at the Royal National Theatre<\/a>. In late 2011, he played Major Stewart in Steven Spielberg<\/a>‘s War Horse<\/a><\/i> (2011). He also played Peter Guillam<\/a>, one of the pivotal roles in Tomas Alfredson<\/a>‘s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy<\/a><\/i> (2011).<\/p>\n

He also starred as Christopher Tietjens in the BBC<\/a>\/HBO<\/a> co-produced miniseries, Parade’s End<\/a><\/i>, which first aired August 2012. He portrayed Smaug<\/a> the dragon through voice and motion capture and also provided the motion capture for the Necromancer<\/a> in Peter Jackson<\/a>‘s The Hobbit<\/i> trilogy.<\/p>\n
