{"id":102431,"date":"2016-10-25T08:05:20","date_gmt":"2016-10-25T13:05:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/?page_id=102431"},"modified":"2016-10-25T08:14:51","modified_gmt":"2016-10-25T13:14:51","slug":"the-great-hall-of-poets-october-2016","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.theonering.net\/torwp\/the-great-hall-of-poets-october-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"The Great Hall of Poets &#8211; October 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Love and Loss: The Lament of Legolas<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" class=\"intro\"><em>By Lydwina Marie<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Best friends we were for many years,<br \/>\nWe shared our laughter, shared our tears,<br \/>\nNow he is gone, I weep alone<br \/>\nIn halls before the empty throne.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">To no one can I turn and go,<br \/>\nFor boundless grief they cannot know.<br \/>\nNow he is gone; I am alone<br \/>\nIn the dark halls by empty throne.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">His mortal years were less than mine,<br \/>\nbut in the night his eyes would shine<br \/>\nwith love and strength, unkindled fire<br \/>\nand from his sword would pour his ire.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I weep and sing for Aragorn,<br \/>\nfor from my eyes his life was torn.<br \/>\nAnd now I weep, I am alone<br \/>\nIn the dark hall by empty throne.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~ * ~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The Sea Maiden<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>By Tony M.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">In a dream of northern lands<br \/>\nI walked along the rainy strand<br \/>\nWhere Vikings peoples once had planned<br \/>\nA venture far and new<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">In truth and legends down through time<br \/>\nIn Saxon tales and bardic rhyme<br \/>\nOf heroes and of heathen crime<br \/>\nAnd travels on the blue<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But now a modern nation-state<br \/>\nWith Church and King and cities great<br \/>\nRemembers how it changed the fate<br \/>\nAnd knowledge of the world<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And there I walked, and softly dreamed<br \/>\nAs in a Christmas card it seemed<br \/>\nAmong the streets that fairly teemed<br \/>\nI came upon a girl<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">With strawberry hair and eyes so blue<br \/>\nThat with a smile she could undo<br \/>\nA man&#8217;s resolve and fealty true<br \/>\nTo home so far away<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Who is this girl who smiles on me?<br \/>\nBe she Elf or Valkyrie?<br \/>\nOr Viking queen upon the sea,<br \/>\nBut lost in modern day?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">She spoke to me in foreign tongue<br \/>\nIn words it seemed to me had sprung<br \/>\nFrom ancient soul through mouth too young<br \/>\nTo carry all they be<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I followed her across the the land<br \/>\nThrough mountain, wood, and fjord and strand<br \/>\nAnd out upon a ship unmanned<br \/>\nWe traveled on the sea<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I sang to her the songs I wrote<br \/>\nBut notes rang hollow in the boat<br \/>\nAnd with a knowing smile she smote<br \/>\nTo ruins all my pride<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But with a touch beneath my cheek<br \/>\nI felt no longer need to speak<br \/>\nAnd knew that things I thought were weak<br \/>\nI need no longer hide<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And then at last she bade me go<br \/>\nBack into the world I know<br \/>\nAnd I awakened cold and slow<br \/>\nIn bed where I was laid<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But now again in waking life<br \/>\nFull of dull and petty strife<br \/>\nI would that I could take to wife<br \/>\nMy dreamed-of fairy maid.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~ * ~~<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>L\u00fathien&#8217;s lament before Mandos<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>By Sarah Idr\u00edel The Fair<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Ai!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">This is the tale of L\u00fathien\u2019s lament<br \/>\nbefore Mandos to seek her love<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Finally the quest for Silmaril<br \/>\nwas accomplished but<br \/>\nBeren was mortally wounded<br \/>\nand L\u00fathien held him in her arms<br \/>\nand Beren smiled and said<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u2018At last thou are mine<\/em><br \/>\n<em>more beautiful than any of jewel! \u2018<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And L\u00fathien said to him<br \/>\nher voice filled with sorrow<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>It is time to bid thee farewell<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Beren Erchamion! (one-handed)<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I seek you, I come to you<\/em><br \/>\n<em>thru grief and death<\/em><br \/>\n<em>and we will meet again<\/em><br \/>\n<em>beyond the Great Sea!<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And Beren died in her arms<br \/>\nand her tears were overflowed<br \/>\nand all the birds went silent in the woods<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And so left<br \/>\nBeren son of Barahir<br \/>\nfrom the House of B\u00ebor<br \/>\nthe knowledge of Men<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Thus L\u00fathien slowly faded<br \/>\nand vanished and with the<br \/>\nhelp of her divine mother<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">her soul went to the Halls of Mandos<br \/>\nand there she stood in front of him<br \/>\nwho pronounces judgement in matters of fate<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And Mandos spoke<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Come, thou hast now entered<\/em><br \/>\n<em>the Halls of Awaiting<\/em><br \/>\n<em>and on what errand thou have<\/em><br \/>\n<em>come to me thru time<\/em><br \/>\n<em>and thought?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And then L\u00fathien spoke<br \/>\nwith trembling voice<br \/>\nin front of Mandos;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>O thou Great N\u00e1mo<\/em><br \/>\n<em>the Doomsman of the Valar<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Thou know my mother<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Melian the Divine<\/em><br \/>\n<em>It has been a long time since<\/em><br \/>\n<em>she has sung with the nightingales<\/em><br \/>\n<em>in the gardens of L\u00f3rien<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And L\u00fathien told one of the saddest<br \/>\ntales of the Elder Days when the world<br \/>\nwas still young and she, daughter of<br \/>\nMelian the Beautiful, used to dance<br \/>\nin the woods of Doriath<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and L\u00fathien told about Beren and the<br \/>\nundying love between them<br \/>\nand she told about the Quest for the Silmaril<br \/>\nand how it all went wrong<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And she spoke<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>O thou Great F\u00ebanturi<\/em><br \/>\n<em>the Master of Spirits<\/em><br \/>\n<em>for the sake of my mother<\/em><br \/>\n<em>who are known to thy brother<\/em><br \/>\n<em>(Irmo the master of visions and dreams)<\/em><br \/>\n<em>and because of the love which she<\/em><br \/>\n<em>feels to her daughter<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I beg you to grant me a wish<\/em><br \/>\n<em>to seek my love who has gone<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I gave my promise to him<\/em><br \/>\n<em>to seek him beyond those dark paths of loneliness<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And so happened that<br \/>\nMandos was moved for the first time<br \/>\nafter hearing her speaking<br \/>\nand it has never happened since<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and even the Ruler of the Death<br \/>\nwas moved before Melian\u2019s daughter<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And Mandos sat silent for a long time<br \/>\nand considered the matter in his heart<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">At last Mandos asked for advice from<br \/>\nManw\u00eb S\u00falimo who was closest<br \/>\nto Il\u00favatar\u2019s mind<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">and for a long time Manw\u00eb pondered<br \/>\nthese things in his mind and heart<br \/>\nand Il\u00favatar gave him an answer<br \/>\nas a purest and highest tone that spoke to him<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">In the meanwhile L\u00fathien had become<br \/>\nalmost like a shadow and a memory<br \/>\nand at last Mandos called her to come in front of him<br \/>\nto hear his judgement<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And Mandos spoke<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>O hear thou Tin\u00faviel<\/em><br \/>\n<em>daughter of Melian<\/em><br \/>\n<em>who is dear to us<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I cannot revoke what has<\/em><br \/>\n<em>already happened<\/em><br \/>\n<em>and I cannot take away the gifts<\/em><br \/>\n<em>that Il\u00favatar has given<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>But I will grant thy wish<\/em><br \/>\n<em>so that thou can lead Beren<\/em><br \/>\n<em>forth once more into the world<\/em><br \/>\n<em>but still as mortal and also thou<\/em><br \/>\n<em>shalt have the gift of Men<\/em><br \/>\n<em>in exchange for this second span of life<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>How long it will be<\/em><br \/>\n<em>or wherever ye must go after it<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I cannot say<\/em><br \/>\n<em>because only Eru knows it<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And it was told that L\u00fathien and Beren<br \/>\nthey lived away from the others and<br \/>\nnever again talked to Men.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And L\u00fathien danced there<br \/>\nbeside the nightingales<br \/>\nand Beren was with her<br \/>\nin that blissful island<br \/>\nof Tol Galen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">~~ * ~~<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>To the Halls of Mandos<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>By Chen\u00e9 \u00a0R.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">How did it come to this?<br \/>\nA memory now are the days of old<br \/>\nSpent frolicking among Elanor and Niphredil blossoms<br \/>\nAs the birds of the Golden Wood filled the air with their song<br \/>\nWe would gallop through the Valley of Singing Gold<br \/>\nWeaving through the silver bark<br \/>\nStopping to sit by the falls<br \/>\nAnd trade stories from far across Arda.<br \/>\nDays of joy are over, and no dreams fill this darkened wood<br \/>\nFor now it is abandoned; our kindred long departed for the West.<br \/>\nThere was a time I yearned to visit Aman,<br \/>\nThat too has come to an end<br \/>\nFor what I desire most<br \/>\nIs lost from all this world has to offer<br \/>\nI will see you again, my love<br \/>\nin the Halls of Mandos,
