Analysing The Battle of The Five Armies preview in The Desolation of Smaug Extended Edition

By the staff of Elanillounico.com.

In the same way as the last year, among the extra content of The Desolation of Smaug Extended Edition there is a little preview of The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies. You can find it in Appendix Part 9 under the title Into the Fire.

It’s actually a very short preview, just four and half minutes long. The official duration is 7:57, but the last three minutes or so are credits.

Before the beginning, we want to remind that the following information has important SPOILERS as much to those who had read the book as to the people who don’t. So, if you don’t want to know several things the day you’ll go to the cinema to watch The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies, you should stop reading.

If you have decided to continue reading, we want to repeat the same things as in previous analysis, sometimes we don’t have confirmed information so we just give our opinion or either our interpretation of the snaps we can see — we could be right or we could be wrong.

Also, we have tried to organise them chronologically to follow the story in the same way we’ll see at the cinema. Still, with a preview so short, it’s hard to know how accurate this outline could be.

Smaug attacks Lake-town

We have already seen pictures of this moment in the alternative version of the eighth vlog that was showed in the San Diego’s Comic-Con two years ago, but we think it’s interesting getting back them and with a better resolution.

We can also see the houses and buildings from Esgaroth burning down, and also Luke Evans is jumping from roof to roof with his bow and his quiver full of arrows, but without the Black Arrow.

We think these snaps from the pre-visualization monitor are interesting too. There, we can see Smaug flying over Lake-town while a man is waiting him with his bow climbed in a bell tower. Maybe this man is Bard.

Ravenhill

It seems that some part of the action from the movie will take part in the guard-post of Ravenhill, which could be seen in the prologue of An Unexpected Journey when the Dwarves fled from Smaug. It’s also in one of the posters and banners of the present movie.

Here we can also see these two pictures from the previsualization showing what seems to be the Ravenhill, a mockup of its inside and an outline of a frozen river that falls in a waterfall and which bed runs near some structures that look Dwarf-built.

In addition, in this image, the set we can see at the back of the room is similar to the conceptual art picture we saw before. This is a snap from the last day of the pick-ups, because Peter Jackson posted one photo of the people disguised as penguins explaining that they were actually fulfilling a purpose although apparently we could think otherwise.
