Sir Ian McKellen initially said no to Gandalf and only scored the pivotal Lord of the Rings role thanks to a chance meeting in a restaurant. While it’s almost inconceivable to imagine wizened wizard Gandalf being played by anyone else, McKellen says shooting for The Fellowship of the Ring – the first film in Peter Jackson’s blockbuster trilogy – clashed with another role he’d signed up for in 2000.
The frank admission comes in a new Lord of the Rings 10-year anniversary special in the December edition of Empire magazine, in which McKellen admits Gandalf was “the role of a lifetime” – but he initially turned down Jackson’s offer. More..

The Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel, also known as the G-Cans Project or the “Underground Temple,” is a subterranean infrastructure that protects Tokyo against floodwaters during rain and typhoon seasons.
The massive structure consists of concrete silos, water tanks and pillars connected to a number of pumps that pump up to 200 tons of water into the Edogawa River per second. Ringer Peter dropped us a line about how one of the enormous collection chambers is also eerily like Moria’s many-pillared Second Hall.

Netflix and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios (MGM) this morning announced a multi-year licensing agreement that will make Netflix the exclusive subscription streaming service in the UK and Ireland for most first-run feature films from the movie studio.
Starting in early 2012, when Netflix is set to make its debut in the UK and Ireland, registered members will be able to watch available content instantly on their television sets, tablets, game consoles, computers and mobile phones. Pricing for the service in these regions has yet to be announced.
Appearing exclusively on Netflix within one year of their theatrical release will be such MGM films as “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” and “The Hobbit: There and Back Again,” the prequels to the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, “Zookeeper”, and “21 Jump Street”.
A selection of MGM catalogue titles will also be available on Netflix in the UK and Ireland, including “Fargo,” “The Usual Suspects,” “West Side Story” and “The Amityville Horror”.
