Dimitra Fimi’s ‘Tolkien, Race and Cultural History’

Claire writes: In early December 2008 TheOneRing.net carried a report of the launch of Dr Dimitra Fimi’s book ‘Tolkien, Race and Cultural History’. Well, the publishers, Palgrave Macmillan, have decided to reissue the book – and this time it’ll be in paperback!

It’s fairly unusual for an academic volume to be published in paperback, so this is a real coup for Dimitra and Tolkien studies. It’s due out on 14th August 2010, but you can always pre-order a copy from your local bookshop or on line. To do that you’ll need the ISBN, which is 9780230272842, the title, author’s name and publisher.

Tolkien Not A Real Artist?

The American Culture writes: Should authors like C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien be considered “real” artists?  Not according to James Bowman.  They and numerous others create what Bowman dismissively refers to as “fantasy art.” And fantasy art isn’t Art.

Mr. Bowman is among that group that just can’t seem to abide anything that smacks of fantasy.  Bowman distinguishes Homer’s tales of gods and heroes because Homer actually believed these beings existed. The modern world, however, knows that elves, faeries, monsters, magic spinning wizards and sword wielding heroes don’t exist. To James Bowman these are childish fantasies that should be put aside in favor of reality. At the very least, we should not include fantasy in discussions about Art.

MGM Enters Second Round of Auction Bids

The auction of MGM has entered its second round of bidding, with approximately half a dozen potential buyers being invited back to the table. This news, courtesy of THR, comes a month after we reported that MGM lenders are growing restless with the pace (and low bid offers) of the auction. MGM is of course facing new ownership and/or restructuring, due to its massive debts.

Second round bidders include Time Warner, Lionsgate, Liberty Media and Summit Entertainment (to name a few). MGM’s financial consultant, Moelis & Co., is trying to get a quality bid on the table this month, as MGM has a big payment due to lenders on March 31st. More..

Blue aliens turn into gold for Weta team

The blue-skinned aliens of Avatar proved golden for Weta Digital, after the Wellington company took home the Oscar statuette for best visual effects. The gong was one of three the sci-fi smash hit picked up at last night’s awards ceremony, including best art direction, which was shared by another Kiwi, Kim Sinclair. The film was widely tipped to win best picture, but lost out to the other top contender, The Hurt Locker. More..

Will A Wellywood Sign Come to Be?

Something new to see the next time we’re all in NZ??? Celebriel forwards information on a possible Wellywood sign in the Miramar Hills.

A massive Wellywood sign celebrating Wellington’s success in the film industry will greet tourists as they fly into the capital. But not everyone agrees on the sign, which will sit on a cutting above Miramar wharf in the seaside eastern suburbs.

Only 44 percent of nearly 9000 respondents to a stuff.co.nz online survey were positive about the idea. More..

This has been cited in other online sources as well. There’s already a Facebook page against it here.

It did cross my mind that this is an early April 1 story from our friends….Maybe we should do a poll on this one.
