Bronze Thror’s Key necklace

It is easy to forget that the events of The Hobbit were hinged on a very simple object, a secret key that would open a secret door. This was Thrór’s Key.

“Here it is!” he said, and handed to Thorin a key with a long barrel and intricate wards, made of silver. “Keep it safe!”

The barrel of the key is engraved in dwarvish Runes with the same phrase that is found on Thrór’s map: “Five Feet High The Door, And Three May Walk Abreast. TH * TH” The TH runes are Thrór’s signature.

The Gollum creature ring

Gollum’s spindly arms and legs wrap around your finger, creating the band. The ring measures approximately 12.3 mm (1/2″) wide at the creature’s elbows and the band measures approximately 5.6 mm (just under 1/4″) wide. Sméagol’s head rises approximately 8.2 mm (5/16″) from your finger. The ring weighs approximately 7.1 grams.

I love Middle-earth. I also love collecting items representing that world. As you’ve probably noticed through the reviews here, I’ve got more than a few items in my collection. It helps bring the magic Tolkien created and Jackson adapted home along with smiles every time I look at my items.

Now, TORn, as part of our super-secret project, wants to showcase you and your collection!

Starting today, through to next Wednesday, we here at TORn will be collecting submissions in search of Ringer Super Collectors at large. What we need are three to four good pictures of you and your collection, along with a brief write-up about why you are a super collector (write-ups must be 500 words or less).

Sneak Peek at the new Badali licensed “The Hobbit” line

Our friends at Badali Jewelry are giving our readers a rare sneak peek at one of the first items in their newly licensed “The Hobbit” line of jewelry: Thror’s Key!

“It is easy to forget the the events of The Hobbit were hinged on a very simple object, a secret key that would open a secret door. This was Thrór’s Key. Thorin’s Dwarven party desired to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from Smaug, The Dragon, more then anything. The answer to the dwarves quest was a map, door and key created in secret by Thorin’s grandfather, Thrór. Gandalf presents Thorin with this secret key when the party joins together at Bilbo Baggins home. “Here it is!” he said, and handed to Thorin a key with a long barrel and intricate wards, made of silver. “Keep it safe!”

Engraved on the barrel of the key is the same phrase written in Dwarvish runes that are found on Thrór’s map: “Five Feet High The Door, And Three May Walk Abreast.” The key will be available in 2 different sizes, a 1 7/8″ Sterling Silver Necklace and a 2 7/8″ White Bronze Necklace or Key Chain. SDCC is coming, what’s a Hobbit to do at comic con 2012?

There is just one week until Comic Con 2012 starts with Preview Night on Wednesday, July 11. But aside from the TORn panel and WB’s panel for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, you may be wondering what else there is for a Hobbit fan to do. The Official SDCC website has put up schedules for panels, autograph sessions, films and portfolio reviews (aspiring artists, please take note). So here is your handy, dandy TORn guide to all things Hobbit and Lord of the Rings related at comic con this year (after the break)

There are no panels on Preview night, so this is the perfect time to explore the exhibit hall and visit all the vendors that will have LOTR and Hobbit related products. Here is a still growing list of booths to visit, including the booths that we will be sharing space with:

THURSDAY:

Please accept our invitation to join TheOneRing.net in one of the convention’s opening panels. We will be in room 6DE starting at 10:15am, please pay attention to the convention center’s instructions on the proper entrances and exits for the panel room. Remember to wear your Tolkien themed costumes, we will be having a Cosplay meetup directly after the panel, out on the Terrace behind the Sails Pavilion. Later in the afternoon you will be able to choose from seeing Elijah Wood on the Wilfred panel, at 4pm in the Indigo Ballroom at the Hilton Bayfront, or of seeing Karl Urban moderate the Masters of the Web presentation at 4:30pm in room 24ABC.

FRIDAY:

This will be a fairly light day for Tolkien programming, but you can see a few LOTR cast members today. First up will be Sean Astin at 10:15am in room 6BCF for the Go Green: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles presentation. You can then have fun the rest of the day, enjoying the WB event outside, or wandering the exhibit hall, and then end your day with John Noble. At 7:15pm in room 6A, you can see a presentation for Dark Matters: Twisted but True, a show on the Science channel hosted by John Noble.

SATURDAY:

With the WB panel in Hall H in the afternoon, it is expected that some of you may line up, maybe even as early as Friday night. In that instance, TORn will be there to help you out. Maybe not the whole night, but don’t be surprised if we pop up from time to time to host a game or two, give out some goodies, and basically, turn the Line into a Line Party. If you feel like taking a break from waiting to get into Hall H, you can find John Noble signing autographs for an hour, starting at 1:30pm out under the Sails Pavilion at table AA19. But please do make sure you are inside Hall H by no later than 2:30pm for the WB panel. The schedule listing promises looks at Pacific Rim, directed by Guillermo Del Toro, a quick look at Man of Steel, and a presentation for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey with Peter Jackson and numerous cast on hand.

SUNDAY:

The last item where you can find a LOTR connection is the Fringe Panel, starring John Noble, running at 10am in Hall H. After this, treat yourself to a complete run through the exhibit hall to ensure you have not missed any collectibles, games and fun before heading home. Consumer Products announced today that The Noble Collection has been granted rights to make products from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and “The Hobbit: There and Back Again.” Noble will also be expanding their already fantastic “The Lord of the Rings” collection. Noble’s offerings will cover collectibles like prop replicas, artifacts, miniature-sized collectors swords and a full range of jewelry. Prices of these items will range from $20 to the neighborhood of $1000 with these items starting to ship in September of this year.

The Arkenstone of Thrain Now Available from Badali Jewelry!

The Arkenstone of Thrain was created and treasured by the Dwarven Longbeards clan of the Lonely Mountain. The Arkenstone was described by Thorin Oakenshield as “a globe with a thousand facets; it shone like silver in the firelight, like water in the sun, like snow under the stars, like rain upon the Moon!” When Bilbo Baggins discovered the Arkenstone on the top of Smaug’s treasure horde, “it was tinged with a flickering sparkle of many colours at the surface.” The stone filled his tiny Hobbit hand, yet he was able to secret the Arkenstone away in his deepest pockets.

The Arkenstone replica is made from fine K9 Crystal which has been treated with an Aurora Borealis plating, giving the the orb a magical glow. The stone exhibits a variety of color depending on what type light its under. The Arkenstone replica comes nestled on a black velvet pillow inside a Dwarven crafted wooden treasure chest. The runes stamped on the name plate on top of the chest read Arkenstone, written in the same Dwarvish runes found on Thorin’s Map. The Arkenstone measures approximately 59 mm (2 5/16″) in diameter — big enough to fill a Hobbit hand, but small enough to hide in a deep pocket.
