Hobbit Movie News and Information at TheOneRing.net Serving Middle-earth Since the First Age.Background 'Rivendell' by Ted Nasmith

ADVERTISMENT - Hobbit Movie News and Rumors - The One Ring

Retro Thursday*: 100% unofficial Middle Earth Hockey Association (MEHA)

Steve Thomas writes: This homage was inspired by the races and places in Middle Earth. The idea came from out of the blue, but I have to admit – after doing a Google search to make sure no one else had thought of it – there was a fantasy (pun intended) Middle Earth hockey league set up by someone else, but I don’t think the site is up anymore. The teams weren’t named the same as I have below.

Anyway, these logos are about a year and a half old so they can technically fall under “Retro Thursday”. I’ve recently slapped them onto tshirts and stickers. The tshirts are completely customizable, meaning you can change the style and colour of the shirt. Zazzle has a large number of different styles from tshirts to hoodies. Check them out here.

DragonCon ready to swoop down upon us

One of the greatest conventions in North America (probably the world for that matter) kicks off in less than a week and as always, DragonCon will feature a programming track dedicated to J.R.R. Tolkien with special guest Sean Astin and TheOneRing.net will be there to help celebrate! For a complete schedule of the Tolkien-themed events, please click here or read on for TORn highlights.

LOTR Corset…Ow!

Luthien writes: I make corsets for a living, and as a huge fan of all things Tolkien I decided to give a “one ring” corset a go. It took me hours to paint the script onto this corset once I had finished the rest of it, but I’m really proud of it. More..

Snag your TheOneRing.net Comic-Con 2010 Shirts Today!

Sales have been suspended. These shirts will be available at DragonCon 2010

Each year at Comic-Con, TheOneRing.net releases at least one new t-shirt for the attendees. And each year we can all but guarantee that we’ll get a load of email from non-attendees looking to purchase the same shirts. This year, we were prepared! We’re happy to announce that you can now place your order for our Comic-Con 2010 T-shirts online. If you were not already aware, TheOneRing.net occasionally runs these t-shirt sales to offset the costs of running our website. Even with an all volunteer staff (including owners), we occasionally find our selves strapped for cash to fund basic operations. Thank you for your continued support!

We had two designs this year: ‘Talk nerdy to me’ and ‘I kissed a geek…And I Liked it!’

TORn Comic-Con presentation on video

Comic-ConSlave Boy Films was at Comic-Con last week and crept into TheOneRing.net’s presentation on an unofficial look at the pair of Hobbit movies. The TORn presentation was Thursday, only hours before Peter Jackson arrived at city of geeks (120,000 strong) who had assembled at San Diego to drink deeply of all the flavors of popular culture. TheOneRing filled every one of the 400 seats in its assigned room with plenty left standing outside in a line but thanks to Slave Boy, the presentation is now available for anybody and everybody. (Click inside to see the videos!)

It’s about ‘Time’ – GDT gives TORn prominent props

Del Toro and HobbitThe June 1st issue of Time, our friend and director of “The Hobbit,” Guillermo del Toro, talks about TheOneRing.net. In the magazine’s regular feature “Short List,” (page 63) where the movers and shakers of the world talk about what folks do in their spare time, he says, “TheOneRing.net is a great community where intelligent, articulate dissenters argue about fascinating minutiae–and not just about fantasy.”

Thanks GDT! We happen to agree and coincidentally a bunch of us were saying the other day that we think you are intelligent, articulate and a dissenter when it comes to following old, tired movie formulas, so now we are even except that Time freaking magazine will not be quoting us about you. Sorry! That really is mighty kind praise from a guy who made cool flicks like “Cronos,” “The Devil’s Backbone,” and “Pan’s Labyrinth.”

Not only did our message board folks post about it here but Ringer spy ToroFan wrote in to our news desk about it. The deep undercover spy asked if its the first time to make it into . . uh . . . Time. That is a pretty legitimate question ToroFan, thanks for asking. The equally legit answer is: Nope! There are at least three other occasions.

Only a few ‘Lake Town Fire Dept’ Shirts Remain

Lake Town Volunteer Fire DepartmentIt looks like a lot of Ringers have been recruited into the ‘Lake Town Fire Department!’ Our first batch of LTFD was a success, but we still have approximately 25 XL and 2 Medium shirts available in stock. Once we’ve made a dent in the remaining inventory, we can go ahead and reprint this shirt in various styles, including the often requested female styles. And of course, we will be premiering a brand new shirt in the coming weeks, so stay tuned! If you enjoy visiting TORn, please help support the site with your t-shirt purchase. Thanks in advance! The Lake Town Volunteer Fire Department Shirt!

Lake Town Volunteer Fire DepartmentWe reported earlier this week that we would be featuring a brand new TORn and Weta t-shirt at Comic-Con. [Comic-Con Shirt] It should be noted however, that the Comic-Con shirt was not the only design TORn has been working on the last few months. So without further delay, we are proud to premiere our ‘Lake Town Volunteer Fire Department‘ shirt! The shirt, pictured on the right, is deep red with the TORn logo on the front and the LTFD logo on the back. We only have a limited amount of these shirts printed at this time, so if the demand is there, we will print another run in various sizes and styles. In fact, if you want a specific style, please email me directly at calisuri@theonering.net and I will keep a running list. While I wont’ be able to reply to all emails, I will keep them handy when deciding on our next printing. In the meantime, check out our latest shirt! DragonCon is Upon us!

TORN Staffer MrCere writes: DragonCon in Atlanta starts this weekend and as it has been for several years now, TheOneRing.net will be in the house! I will be at a fan table in the basement of the Marriott where we will be selling our new, but as yet unrevealed t-shirts. (Hint: it has a reference to elves from another currently popular fictional universe).

But besides supporting the not-for-profit TORn, every Lord of the Rings fan should come by the table and pick up a gift card from Sideshow Collectibles while supplies last. Each person attending the show can claim a card until my supply runs out and each card is worth between $10 and $100 on Sideshow’s in-stock supply. This includes several very cool Lord of the Ring items.

Each person wanting a prize will roll two dice and generate a number between 1 and 100. (2d10 for geeks like me). Every number is a winner but each day we will feature a “GRAND PRIZE” item from Sideshow that will astound and amaze your friends and neighbors if you win. Better still, Sideshow will ship the item directly to you at home so there will be no need to carry it away from Atlanta or lug it around the convention. We will also give away some TORn shirts and some grand but non-”GRAND PRIZE” LOTR items from SideshowCollectibles.com at the table each day for those lucky enough to roll specific numbers.

The Tolkien schedule is here and we are honored to have Friday’s annual “Evening at Bree” dedicated to our friend and staffer, the late Balin. See you at the show!
