Clock is ticking on the start of HobbitCon 2 in Europe

hobbitconlogoBONN — HobbitCon 2, in Bonn, Germany is just hours away from starting with a hotel packed full of special guests, lecturers, and fans from around the world.

The Maritim Hotel in Bonn hosts the entire event, which takes over the whole property for the weekend. A full slate of lectures and presentations are scheduled starting just a few hours from now. All of the 13 dwarves from The Hobbit movies are present save Richard Armitage, who is at WonderCon, James Nesbitt who was scheduled but had to cancel and Aiden Turner. That means Adam Brown, Jed Brophy, John Callen, Ken Stott, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Stephen Hunter, Dean O’Gorman, Graham McTavish and William Kircher are all involved. (That means three trolls are here as well!) The gentlemen were present and were rumored to have been observed hanging around the hotel last night talking together and to each other. Reportedly, 26 countries are represented at the event.

Richard Taylor and Royd Tolkien were also in the house as was Mark Atkin — Thorin Oakenshiled in scale size. TheOneRing.net has three panels scheduled for the weekend, including one tomorrow evening, speculating on the third film in Peter Jackson’s adaptation. With the entire event scheduled in one place, it gives the whole affair a remarkable, intimate feeling that is a little challenging to explain. Its one of those things where you have to be there.

In fact, European fans can still make that happen, buying tickets by walking up to the hotel. Details can be found RIGHT HERE. TORn would love to see you in person around the hotel and at the first panel at 5 p.m.!

Expect updates all weekend long.

HobbitCon 2 in Bonn, Germany – April 19-21

hobbitconlogoAs staffer Garfeimao stated in the post below, convention season is getting going! The same weekend that some TORn staff will be at WonderCon in Anaheim, there is a very exciting convention taking place in Germany – HobbitCon! Message boarder kiwifan attended last year, and shared the fun of this exclusive event with us.  Here’s what she had to say:

How would have Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit looked as a duology?

The Hobbit Bag End Door Originally, Peter Jackson intended his adaptation of The Hobbit to be a two-film effort — a duology.

We’ll never know for certain how it would have turned out, but in this feature TORn writer Captain Salt brings together the known facts to give us some idea of just how it might have shaped up.

Graham McTavish talks exclusively to TheOneRing.net

Today (January 4th) is actor Graham McTavish’s birthday – Happy Birthday to him from everyone here at TORn!  Back at the start of December, our favourite tattooed dwarf sat down with TORn staffer greendragon, to chat about The Hobbit, about his latest project (playing Dougal MacKenzie in the Outlander series), and to reveal what it’s like to spend months working with a bunch of sweaty men in fat suits – and even to risk inviting them over for parties! Continuing greendragon’s ‘Inside the Middle-earth Actor’s Studio’ series, McTavish also discussed at length his approach to acting, what he sees as the greatest challenge in creating a role, and how he began his career on the stage. McTavish is an excellent raconteur, and there were many laughs during the conversation - read on to find out all that he had to say.

Knitted Hobbit characters from the UK

knitted hobbitWe know that Tolkien fans are a creative bunch – we’ve seen fan made paintings, drawings, sculptures, even cakes!  The latest Hobbity handicrafts to come to our attention are the brilliant creations of a lady in Wales.  Denise Salway knits characters from the Hobbit films, planning her own designs and sometimes taking over a month for one piece!  Readers may have seen her work on twitter, where she is @KnittingWitchUK, and where Stephen Hunter and Graham McTavish have admired her knitted Dwalin and Bombur! Read more about her amazing work – and see some stunning photographs - in this article.

Want to wish Happy Holidays to your favourite cast members? Here’s who’s on Twitter…

Last August, TORn Staffer Justin posted a list of cast members who tweet.  In the spirit of festive greetings, we thought we’d reshare - and update – that list.

New clip from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug – “Into the Barrels!”

Barrels out of Bond Earlier today a brand-new clip from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug premiered during a Google+ hangout with Peter Jackson, Evangeline Lilly and Richard Armitage.

It featured a glimpse of a very memorable moment from the book, as Bilbo helps the dwarves escape from the Mirkwood Elves. The clip has now popped up on YouTube in high definition, and we’ve posted it for you here. Enjoy! (more…)

There, and then what? The Dwarves’ development in The Desolation of Smaug

Event Cinemas - The Hobbit_ The Desolation Of Smaug A flood of trailers, interviews and TV spots have raised all sorts of questions over exactly how events will pan out across The Desolation of Smaug. Here, Captain Salt takes a long hard look at the implications for character development among our beardy friends who are so keen to reclaim their heritage, and the lost treasures of Erebor.

Needless to say, lots of speculation and lots of potential movie spoilers. If you’re avoiding these, look away now! (more…)

The Hobbit’s dwarves: before make-up, and after

You’ve seen the dwarven cast members of The Hobbit without make-up. And you’ve seen them all kitted out as well. But have you seen each side-by-side: actor versus character, before versus after?

I hadn’t, not all at once, which was why I thought I’d share these images that I stumbled on, out there in the wild reaches of the internet (okay, Imgur, to be precise). Looking at them as a group, it struck me quite forcefully how they crew had chosen to work with the facial structure of each actor, rather than create something entirely new. Jed Brophy and Mark Hadlow are probably the most striking examples. Anyway, enjoy! (more…)

Warner Bros. full synopsis for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug provides some plot hints?

desolation of smaug poster I can’t recall if this has been previously revealed, but this official synopsis — more complete than the short version currently on The Hobbit website — actually has some really interesting implications if you have a read through and examine who’s listed and (more importantly), who’s not.

As folks observed after the debut of the second Desolation of Smaug trailer, Guillermo del Toro is back in the credits for his work on the screenplay. There’s a co-producer nod for the late Eileen Moran as well. Highlight the space below to read the key omissions, and some fairly hefty spoiler analysis of what those omissions could mean for the movie.

Company of Tweets: Follow Your Favourite Hobbit Actors on Twitter

twitter TORN iconAs you are aware, many Hobbit cast members have their own twitter accounts. After Evangeline Lilly participated in a live Twitter Q&A the other day, we thought it would be a great time to remind you of the official accounts. As far as we know each actor manages their twitter personally, offering a great way to keep up with them. (more…)

Happy birthday to Ori, aka Adam Brown!

adam brown birthdayWe may be too late for his birthday in New Zealand, but it’s still his day in some parts of the world!  Amidst all the hard work going on in New Zealand just now, the Hobbit gang found time to celebrate Ori’s birthday – and co-star Stephen Hunter tweeted this great photo of some of the cast gathered for birthday fun!  (After TORn retweeted Stephen’s pic, James Nesbitt and John Callen retweeted us!  We’re all connected on one great big web; just like the dwarves in Mirkwood…)

Happy birthday to the dwarf who makes braids and chunky knits look good!
