It’s not been a bad year for Luke Evans, what with turns in Immortals, The Raven and The Three Musketeers all in the bag. He was in San Diego to promote at least two of those movies, so naturally we grabbed him and asked about his latest, and most geek-friendly, role: Bard the Bowman in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit. During, Comic-Con 2011 Weta released the next amazing environment from their The Lord of the Rings line. The item is noneother than Orthanc the home or Saruman during the battle for The One Ring. This version of Orthanc is before we see Saruman tear apart Isengard to use in his part of making war in Middle-Earth.
The detailing in Orthanc is off the charts! It looks like the statue is made from real obsidian and pulled from what we saw on screen during the trilogy. The addition of the trees add a feel of peace that this location had before Saruman sold himself out to Sauron. For owners who have Orthanc after Saruman destroyed the beauty that you see here the comparisons will make for one of the cooler looks in any The Lord of the Rings collecton.
Our TORn staffers at Comic-Con are busy (and tired) but the time is coming soon when the live streaming will return to TheOneRing.net/live and continue for the convention’s afternoon and then into San Diego’s night. We want to under-promise and over-deliver so we will only tease that if things go well, an astounding guest or two might join us today. We will visit Weta’s booth and Sideshow Collectibles to feature the news LOTR items available as well as cool stuff and cool people from everywhere.
The first time appearance of legendary director Steven Spielberg was a big, big deal at the San Diego Comic Con. Despite all his top-grossing and critically acclaimed movies that fit the genre, appearing at the show had never worked out. So knowing he would show up to talk about The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn set the popular culture celebration all abuzz. When co-producer Peter Jackson shocked the movie-loving world and showed up Friday morning, the euphoria and applause shook the convention hall to its foundations.
On this episode of Hobbit in 5, we talk about Peter Jackson’s latest production diary videos, show off the new trailer for The Lord of the Rings: War in the North, introduce pictures for The Lord of the Rings Online: Rise of Isengard, look for crew accommodations in Piopio, NZ, and find out what Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis think about Mikael Persbrandt. We’ll also cover Thrain in our character study!
Thanks to our executive producers: Henry Tobin and Danielle Logan
Thanks to Lissuin for the heads up! Andrew Sorcini writes: The The Adventures of Tintin panel began with something very special for the Comic-Con audience today in San Diego: a retrospective of Steven Spielberg‘s career, and the presentation of Comic-Con’s Inkpot lifetime achievement award to the respected filmmaker himself, which he receieved to a standing ovation. Spielberg discussed how even before he knew about Tintin, his films had been compared to Herge’s work for years. When preparing to develop the film, he approached Weta to ask them to show him a test of Tintin’s dog Snowball, to see if CGI would be a proper medium. He then showed that presumed test, which featured producer Peter Jackson as Capt. Haddock, with a CGI Snowy behind him, performing tricks and getting drunk from Haddock’s whiskey. More..
He may not be at Comic-Con, and the only Hobbit content is from TheOneRing.net, but Peter Jackson knows that fans are salivating for more on the two Hobbit movies and wow has he delivered. From the set he leads viewers through memories from cast and crew of the first segment of shooting including a surprise vet in the final shot. Enjoy!.

TheOneRing.net will be streaming LIVE from San Diego Comic-Con 2011 and we hope you will join us! Starting at 10AM PT on Thursday, we’ll broadcast (or attempt to!) our entire ‘The Hobbit’ panel live from San Diego. A reminder that TheOneRing.net will be at Comic-Con this Thursday giving a 50-minute presentation titled “Hobbit Talk,” which we are hoping to stream live as we also bring the flavor of Comic-Con to readers.
Our friends at Weta wanted to remind fans that they will have a booth on the showroom floor and pass along this message: “Weta Workshop would like to welcome all our friends from theonering.net to come visit us at the Weta booth at Comic Con next week. This year we have a bigger crew than ever before with conceptual designers Daniel Falconer, Greg Broadmore, Paul Tobin, Claire Hackett, Stephen Crowe and Stuart Thomas all attending.
Want to get a cool t-shirt and help fund TheOneRing.net’s trip to Comic-Con and DragonCon? As you can imagine, it is quite expensive to send staff to these annual conventions, and this year, more so than others, we can’t fully depend on our staff paying their own way. (TheOneRing.net is a completely volunteer organization – no staffer is ever paid. We depend greatly on your support) In an effort to raise funds, we are selling our ‘Lake town Archery Club’ shirt as well as some other odd size shirts we found in the TORn attic remnant. Click on the ‘continue reading’ button below to view the shirt and size availability. And thank you in advance for your generous support of the site! Don’t want a shirt and just want to send a donation? We won’t argue with you! Our PayPal email is webmaster @ theonering.net.
There it is, right near the top of the newly released Comic-Con Thursday programming schedule: “10:00-11:00 TheOneRing.net: Hobbit Talk”.
That means Comic-Con is having TORn back to talk Hobbit with fans and media at one of the biggest and best popular culture celebrations in the world. Our own staffers Quickbeam and MrCere will take the stage to deliver multimedia images and words, rumors and truths and maybe even deliver a secret or two. Garfeimao and other TORn staff will be distributing some select items to the always supportive fans. Other staffers, like the mysterious Calisuri collaborate on the presentation to make it as full of information and fun as possible. Our team will also be reporting on everything Middle-earth related that we can dig up at the event that starts with preview night on July 20 and runs through the weekend.
As always TheOneRing.net is not-for-profit (nobody gets paid) and in fact, the site supports literacy charities, so look very soon for a t-shirt remnant sale to help cover our expenses for this big show.
The Thursday start time means, from past experience, that as soon as convention doors open, attendees will find the way to room 7AB in the upstairs of the conventional hall to line up for the always capacity crowds that leave many standing in the hall waiting to get in.
