Awan has championed “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” and loves both the realms of Tolkien and the work of Peter Jackson. He has used MrCere (Larry D. Curtis) as a frequent guest and in this episode they discuss both the upcoming second installment of the film and the success of the first and Curtis talks big picture about his time in New Zealand. His unexpected journey has taken Bilbo Baggins and his dwarf buddies from bucolic Hobbiton and through the Misty Mountains. And over the course of the three-hour movie, it almost felt like we were there for Every. Single. Step. Now Peter Jackson appears poised to ramp up the action and kick things into a higher gear. Or at least that’s the promise in the new trailer for “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.”
The second chapter in the three-part Middle-earth epic has been flying under the radar for the better part of the year with a notable non-presence at San Diego Comic-Con and no new footage revealed for several months. But that all changed today with a burst of dragon fire to remind you that Smaug is one badass reptile. And he’s not the only peril facing our intrepid band. J.R.R. Tolkien, one of the world’s most celebrated fantasy writers, was inspired by time spent on the bloodsoaked battlefield. John Garth, author of Tolkien and the Great War reports.
A world away from subtle, magnificent Smaug of The Hobbit, Tolkien’s first dragons are surreal hybrids of beast and machine. They lumber against the elf-city of Gondolin, spouting fire and clanking, with orctroops hidden inside. (more…)Posted in Christopher Tolkien, Green Books, Hobbit Book, J.R.R. Dragonfire and ruin. That is what you will bring upon us! He cannot see beyond his own desire! Bard the Bowman
Audience reaction to Hollywood’s first high frame rate movie, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was decidedly mixed, but frame rates—along with higher resolution, laser light, immersive sound and second screen experiences were very much on the minds of digital cinema leaders last week at the International Broadcasters Convention.
During the event, this community debated how to respond to the advancements taking place in home entertainment. “TV [technology] is moving faster,” admitted Disney’s vp production technology Howard Lukk during a panel discussion. “What keeps us up at night is how [cinema] stays the premium experience.” (more…)Posted in Director news, Events, Hobbit Movie, Other Events, Peter Jackson, The Hobbit, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, The Hobbit: There and Back Again
I have been reading Tolkien for as long as I’ve been able to. That is to say, that when, in fourth grade I became capable of reading and understanding the Hobbit, I did. And I have been reading the Hobbit (and the Lord of the Rings) annually ever since. It’s fair to say that the lessons taught in the Hobbit were as formative to me as a human being as those taught from my Sunday School’s Bibles or Slater Elementary’s textbooks. “What lessons?” I hear you ask. “It’s just a silly story. It’s not a parable or fable.” How wrong you are. (more…)Posted in Hobbit Book, Hobbit Movie, The Hobbit
In this new TORn Library piece, our newest feature writer Gibbelins examines the difference between skill and knowledge and whether the former has an unjustly sullied reputation in Middle-earth as a result of the rash and self-seeking acts of craftsmen such as Saruman and Fëanor.
Two paths of Wisdom
The concepts I wish to discuss are best expressed with the Quenya roots ‘curu-’ and ‘nolo-’, but I will try not to subject you to the Elvish for the entire essay. Both of these roots have at times been translated as ‘wisdom’, and yet they represent different sides of wisdom and different inclinations. I’ll use the English glosses ‘skill’ and ‘knowledge’ as reasonable approximations. The contrast between the two ideas is, I think, fundamental to Tolkien’s understanding of how to live righteously. Today is September 22 — which means that (in the Shire Reckoning) it’s the birthdays of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins. To celebrate here are fourteen fabulous quotes (and we’re sure you, dear reader, could think of many more) from Bilbo in The Hobbit.

This hobbit was a very well-to-do hobbit, and his name was Baggins. The Bagginses had lived in the neighbourhood of The Hill for time out of mind, and people considered them very respectable, not only because most of them were rich, but also because they never had any adventures or did anything unexpected: you could tell what a Baggins would say on any question without the bother of asking him.
This is a story of how a Baggins had an adventure, found himself doing and saying things altogether unexpected. He may have lost the neighbours’ respect, but he gained-well, you will see whether he gained anything in the end.
