… and Beren joined his beloved Lúthien in a fate unknown to anyone but Eru.
On Sep. 2, 1973, John Ronald Reuel Tolkien left this world and the Great Story behind. I thought I would commemorate this day with a FLASHBACK to the last days of his life, which, I hope, I can show were not altogether unpleasant (his last hours notwithstanding).

According to Dre Rivas of Film.com, we seem to have lost our passion after the Oscars were handed out for ROTK…
An Apology: The Ringers Fans of Tolkien and Jackson, you will notice LOTR is fairly low on this list. In fact, here you are, into my bear trap and at the bottom…You’re not far from my thoughts. I understand the LOTR fanbase is large and mighty. But where’s the passion people? This list is about what you have done for me lately. And you cats went into hiding after Return of the King took home its eight billion Oscars. Now it’s like you don’t even know me. Hell, even the Trekkies smoked you on this list. You sold out your soul for a gold stiff? No, no, this can’t be.
Well, we may be at the bottom of that list, but did you notice that, in the poll on left-hand side of the page, we’re in the majority? [Read Full Story]

Currently, Ms. Eskenazi represents the Estate of J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books, in a $150 million profit participation action against New Line Cinema.

June – Mabel Suffield Tolkien converts to Catholicism, which shocks both the Unitarian Suffields and the Baptist Tolkiens. Despite being familially estranged and financially cut off due to this decision, she remains undeterred and begins her sons’ instruction in the Catholic faith, one that becomes especially deep-rooted in Ronald for his entire life.

From the New Zealand Herald: Animation technology used in blockbuster movies such as Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings is now helping children to walk. The Gait Laboratory at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane uses animation technology developed at Weta Digital in Wellington to see why some children, as young as 3, have trouble walking. Gait Laboratory director Dr Robyn Grote said the technology was reducing the number of times children had to undergo surgery because of its precision in mapping a child’s motion. Read More

The Order of the Companions of Honour consists of the Queen and only 65 other members, all outstanding talents in their fields from painters Lucian Freud and Sir David Hockney to acclaimed actress Dame Judi Dench. From the Otago Daily Times: Reader’s Digest commissioned an independent research firm to survey a representative sample of 500 New Zealand adults. The Most Trusted survey asked respondents about three categories: individuals, professions and brands.
“Cuddly filmmaker Peter Jackson is right up there at 14, while Queen Elizabeth ties with Richie McCaw at 20th equal just ahead of food-in-a- minute merchant Allyson Gofton and Hayley Westenra.”
Most Trusted? Well, if a man is willing to bare his soul… or the soles of his feet, he’s pretty much an open book.
