demo_lego_hobbit_hirez_482x273 Folks with a PC running Windows 8, 7, XP, or Vista can now download and install a free demo of Lego’s forthcoming The Hobbit videogame.

The demo sequence allows you to fight your way out of the Goblin town in the Misty Mountains. One very neat thing I observed is that the narration is by none other than Christopher Lee.

Whilst traversing High Pass over The Misty Mountains, Thorin Oakenshield and his company of Dwarves accidentally set up camp on top of a secret entrance-way into Goblin Town. The player is tasked with battling the Goblin King and then navigating the perilous gangways and boardwalks of Goblin Town in a frenzied escape!

In the complete game, players will visit a number of locations, including Bag End, Hobbiton, The Misty Mountains, Goblin-town, Mirkwood and Rivendell. LEGO The Hobbit: The Video Game will be released on April 8. Content covering the events of the final of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit films, There and Back Again will be released as as DLC at a later date.

IGN has a review of the demo sequence here. An excerpt:

Our demo began in the middle of a fight with the Goblin King, who, just like in the movie, is a bit silly instead of scary. His massive LEGO gullet is just as disturbing, though. LEGO Goblin Town looks just as brown and cavernous as it does in the film and it’s incredible how Traveler’s Tales once again brings these vast set pieces and iconic characters to life with LEGO bricks.

The Goblin King battle was broken in to multiple stages, each showing off a new element of LEGO gameplay. In the first section, Bilbo fell underground and I had to fight off a few goblins using the stalwart Thorin Oakenshield LEGO. Equipped with an Elven blade and shield, he’s an excellent fighter. Much to my amusement, the goblins he fought went flying off the screen as he took them out, rather than simply falling at his feet.
