Video: Gandalf addresses the White Council

December 8, 2012 at 2:06 am by Demosthenes  -

The theatrical release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is less than a week away, but for those Peter Jackson fans who can’t stand the wait, here’s a Hero Complex exclusive sneak peek at a scene from the film featuring Gandalf, Saruman, Elrond and Galadriel. Warning: spoilers.

The clip, which runs 1 minute and 11 seconds, foreshadows the events of The Lord of the Rings, set 60 years after The Hobbit, and features Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, Hugo Weaving as Elrond and Christopher Lee as Saruman sitting in council in the Elven city of Rivendell. Just click on the image below to head to the LA Times site and check it out. For close readers of Tolkien, the reference to “a hard-won Watchful Peace” is intriguing.

TRANSCRIPT

Galdriel: The dragon has long been on your mind.
Gandalf: It is true, my lady. Smaug owes allegiance to no-one. But if he should side with the enemy… a dragon could be uysed to terrible effect.
Saruman: What Enemy? Gandalf, the enemy is defeated. Sauron is vanquished. He can never regain his full strength.
Elrond: Gandalf, for 400 years we have lived in peace. A hard-won watchful peace.
Gandalf: Are we? Are we at peace? Trolls have come down from ther mountains. They are raiding villages, destroying farms. Orcs have attacked us on the road…
Elrond: Hardly a prelude to war.
Saruman: Always you must meddle. Looking for trouble where none exists.
Galadriel: Let him speak.
Gandalf: There is something at work beyond the evil of Smaug, something far more powerful. We can remain blind, but it will not be ignoring us, that I can promise you.
