But it is trading on Tolkien’s book. Tolkien was already author of the century before the films. PJ owes a lot to ripping off Tolkien’s work. How many when to see LOTR because they were fans of the Goonies rather than going because they loved Tolkien? Notso many I guess…

In the chapter “The Council of Elrond” in Fellowship, Gandalf tells Frodo all sorts of things that happened during The Hobbit that were not in the book itself. Some things that PJ is adding are also from Tolkien’s letters. While this romance doesn’t happen in the book, I’m just glad that PJ is adding an actual female character where there wasn’t one previously. There were prison guards, and they were unnamed, why is it a stretch for one of them to be female? There could be a problem if the film is presented as a love story, but most likely it will be nothing more than what Gimli had for Galadriel. Yes, it is an expansion, but it isn’t one that contradicts the general themes of Tolkien’s work as a whole. Basically everything he wrote besides The Hobbit was laden with romantic relationships, and the book probably would have included one if Tolkien hadn’t specifically written it for his kids. If he were alive today, I think he would approve of these changes because it parallels his other works.

People should lighten up. A tiny flirtation, emphasis on the tiny, could be a great comedic touch. It’s called artist license and I don’t think there’s a problem here. And yes, the actors involved are eye candy, so Thanks Mr Jackson.

Arrgh arrgh arrgh no don’t do this to us again PJ!
I would guess, though, that this will turn out to not be as bad as the rumors suggest. If he’s going to introduce a new character, it wouldn’t be much of an additional deviation from the book if one of the dwarves had a crush on her. I still hope that it doesn’t come out like that though.
