“A wizard is never late, Frodo Baggins. Nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to.”

-Gandalf to Frodo while entering into Hobbiton for Bilbo’s 111th Birthday

During Comic-Con 2011 fans of The Lord of the Rings got a chance to see the second statue from Weta’s character statue line. The character fans can now get their hands on is none other than Gandalf the Grey. This version of Gandalf captures the Wizard while thinking which route is the right route to take during their trip through Moria.

The importance that Gandalf plays to the events that happen in Middle-Earth from the time of The Hobbit through the events of The Lord of the Rings is huge. Without the leadership that Mithrandir Sauron may just come to power and events in Middle-Earth play out much differently. Leadership is what comes through loud and clear when you look at this statue.

We here at TORn partnered with our friends at Weta Workshop would like to announce a contest for the superb Gandalf the Grey statue. After reading the review of this collectible we invite you to enter this contest to possibly win one for your The Lord of the Rings collection. The contest for Gandalf will last ten days ending on February 1st, 2012 at Midnight CST.  To enter, please fill out this formclick here.

Thank you the readers for taking time to read the review and a BIG thank you to Weta for allowing us to give away an awesome collectible.

The Lord of the Rings logo appears in the upper left hand corner while a screen capture of Gandalf from The Fellowship of the Ring in the upper right hand corner. In the center of the box you have a great picture of the Gandalf piece itself with the name of the collectible under the screen capture of Gandalf. On one side of the box you get a great picture of Gandalf while the other contains multiple great images of items that you can find on Weta’s website. The back of the box has one final image of Gandalf with a bit more on the collectible as well as the sculptor.

SCULPTING

Steven Saunders was the superb talent behind sculpting this piece and bringing this version of Gandalf to life. Mr. Saunders was more than successful in his task making sure this is a must have version of a beloved character. The likeness to Sir Ian McKellen who played Gandalf is among the best jobs we’ve seen on any collectible. The texture added to his outfit is also really wonderfully done and makes the polystone have a look of wool. Finally, to complete statue we have some nice additions like Gandalf holding his smoking pipe and his hat lying at his feet while trying to figure, which is the best route to get through Moria.

PAINT

The paintwork on Gandalf is as exceptional as the sculpt work. The effort put into sculpting the polystone so it resembles cloth is truly maximized by the paintwork on this statue. Then you have the work done on the face, which gives the proper amount of character to Gandalf. The skin tone on Gandalf looks truly as life like as you will see on any collectible, and gives the statue just that little something to make it a must have purchase.

Overall

Gandalf costs $70 retail via Weta’s web site, which is a steal for something as superb as this collectible is. So do yourself a favor and hope over to Weta’s site and place your order now for a fantastic Gandalf statue.
