An exploration of J.R.R Tolkien’s works, his Welsh inspirations and his influence on others

Buckland Hall, a stunning Victorian mansion in the heart of the Welsh borders, opens its doors on Sunday 11th December, 2011 to celebrate everything J.R.R Tolkien. Learn about the great fantasy writer in front a roaring fire, enjoying a glass of mulled wine in friendly company.

This perfect pre-Christmas evening will provide the chance to explore and celebrate Tolkien’s works; guests will discover how Wales inspired his plots and creations, and hear from contemporary writers on how his work has influenced them.

Guest speakers include: Dr Dimitra Fimi, author of Tolkien, Race and Cultural History: From Fairies to Hobbits and lecturer at Cardiff Metropolitan University (formerly UWIC); Catherine Fisher, highly acclaimed children’s fantasy novelist, author of The Oracle Trilogy, Incarceron and Sapphique, and recently named Young People’s Laureate of Wales; and Stephen Walsh, historical and Tolkien-inspired artist whose illustrations have appeared in Harper Collins’ Lord of the Rings postcard collection and the ‘Middle Earth Collectible Card Game’ by Iron Crown Enterprises.

Entry is by pre-booked ticket only and all tickets are non-refundable. A welcome glass of mulled wine and light supper snacks are included in the ticket price of £16 per person (£13 for Welsh Academy Members). Arrival at 5.30 pm for a 6pm prompt start.

There is an option to stay overnight at Buckland Hall and make full use of the facilities. Accommodation is an additional £35pp (shared room) or £55pp for a private room. The accommodation price includes breakfast the following morning.

For further information or to book a ticket, please contact Nia Harries at Buckland Hall (01874) 730330 or email admin@bucklandhall.co.uk. This event is supported by Literature Wales.
