The Hope Players production of The Hobbit adapted for the stage by Glyn Robbins, opens at the ADC Theatre on the 20th of April 2011.
While relaxing in his garden, Bilbo Baggins is surprised by the wizard, Gandalf the Grey. Gandalf informs Bilbo he is seeking an adventurer to join him on a quest. Though initially interested, Bilbo decides against such a worrisome journey. The following afternoon Gandalf arrives at Bilbo’s doorstep accompanied by thirteen insatiable, raucous Dwarves. After trying to entertain the unexpected party, Bilbo reluctantly joins the thirteen Dwarves on a quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain: an ancient Dwarven establishment that had been taken over by a terrible fire-drake named Smaug.
Michael Guinness, the production’s designer and producer explains: “There is no time more relevant than today for a play that displays how fraudulence and greed can be the calamity of man’s own demise.”
The Hope Players theatre group formed out of the Hope ’08 Initiative. Now called Hope Cambridge, it is an initiative of churches working together in Cambridge using the inspiration of the truth and bringing it to people of all backgrounds.
The production is directed by Anne Beaumont featuring music from award-winning composer Geoff Page. The Hobbit offers many frights and thrills for audiences of all ages. Younger theatre-goers may find some moments quite scary. The play runs from Wednesday, 20th April through Saturday, 23rd April 2011.
