“There and Back Again” won’t work, because it covers the whole story. “An Unexpected Journey” is just lame. They should just call it “The Hobbit, Part One” and The Hobbit, Part Two;” in sensible hobbit fashion.

I would prefer if the first movie was titled “There and back again” and the second “An unexpected journey”. At least if movie two is going to act as a tie between movie one and LOTR. If so, an unexpected journey may refer to the one noteworthy journey done by Bilbo after the killing of Smaug but before LOTR. I do remember that he didn’t stop travelling after coming home in the book.

Gimli finds Gandalf at Bree! No, I meant Thorin Oakenshield. Following the War of the Ring, when Sauron was finally defeated, Gandalf reflected with Gimli and Frodo regarding what might have happened, had not the Quest of Bilbo and the dwarves to Smaug’s Lair not taken place: ‘Dragon-fire and savage swords in Eriador, night in Rivendell.There might be no Queen in Gondor. We might now hope to return from the victory here only to ruin and ash. But that has been averted–because I met Thorin Oakenshield one evening on the edge of spring in Bree. A chance meeting, as we say in Middle-earth.’ (Appendix A – p. 449.)

THE HOBBIT – (The Red Book) – THERE AND BACK AGAIN, Part I – “Stages In the Quest for Dragon Gold”. Part II – “Reclaiming the Dragon’s Lair”. The story develops in stages. Gimli finds Gandalf at Bree, and they express their concerns regarding the Dragon. Gandalf visits Bilbo. “The Unexpected Party.” The mountain pass and the trolls. Beorn’s hall. Into Mirkwood. Etc. These are the stages on the Quest. Then, the other part of the adventure, having arrived at the lake-town, and receiving the help of men. That part of the adventure involves the actual attempt and the events of reclaiming the Dragon’s lair! If you don’t think that Gandalf would approve of these titles, then you are certainly smoking the wrong brand of pipeweed.

The March 25, 2941 chance meeting of Gandalf and Gimli at Bree (see Appendix A, part III – “Durin’s Folk”) marks the very beginning of the story of The Hobbit. It was a concern over what Sauron’s designs might be for the use of the dragon Smaug that caused Gandalf to want to take some action before Sauron’s arm grew too long. Gandalf was sent to Middle Earth in order to reverse the decline among human kind in their awareness of the existence of the One God – Eru Iluvatar. The miraculous signs that Gandalf showed forth revealed to humans the existence of a higher order than merely that of the biological realm – as was the primary failure of Darwin’s theories. (He – a scientist – couldn’t determine whether God exists or not.)

“Stages in the Quest for Dragon Gold” would be acceptable for the title of the first movie. “Reclaiming the Dragon’s Lair” could make for an interesting title for part II.

Both titles are fine. People get their knickers in a knot over such silly things. But the first movie really doesn’t need a subtitle.

“An Unexpected Journey” completely lacks the subtlety of Tolkien’s literature. Stick to his actual words, not a dumb mish-mash. Just because the words “unexpected” and “journey” appear in the book doesn’t mean you can just slap them together. The first part should just be “The Hobbit” and the second part “There and Back Again”.
