The important thing here is in my humble opinion to understand that the books are completely different works. The Hobbit was written for children, therefor talking animals are quite natural. I really hope PJ does not try to make The Hobbit in the same style as the trilogy. It must be a work on it's own, not a sequel/prequel. The artistic approach needs to reflect the difference between the books.

As long as the CGI is of excellent quality....even better than that of Narnia....then the animals should be able to talk. That is the way Tolkien wrote the story. But I do agree that if it doesn't look real, then it would spoil the movie. It MUST look real and not computer generated. But that's always the trick. Isn't it.

I can't believe the three comments on here are AGAINST talking animals. What kind of Tolkien fan site is this? When he wrote the story the idea of a talking animal was somewhat off the wall but he obviously thought that talking animals offered a special element to his world. I agree that most if not all talking animals done on film have been hokey, but in Tolkien where it is, first, pivotal to the events and, second, part of what made his world so magical, it is frankly a shame that any Tolkien treatment would omit the talking animal. If it looks goofy a bit, thats alright, as long as they take ownership of the nature of the character and the magic of such a possibility. Case in point, Lucas took a stiff looking puppet and made a main character out of it (Yoda) and yes it looked a little goofy, but he owned it fully and made it fit the atmosphere of the film. Now imagine Yoda NOT talking. Ridiculous.

THis is not Narnia, don't turn it into that. The Eagles, the Wargs, the Trolls..none spoke in LOTR. In some cases these are not only the same species, they are the same characters! Do not let them speak. Radagast and Gandolf should be able to communicate enough to allow speaking without talking.

Maybe it is better to see animals talking telepathicaly, with echoing voice inside of mind. If animals use their mouths to talk, I think it will spoil the movie, depth and feeling of entire story.
When I read The Hobbit, I felt exactly like all animals are talking thru telepathy.
Something like Saourons or Galadriels voice with atmospheric feeling would be great, otherwise if animals will use their mouth I think it will look like Harry Potter, not like some lost ancient history.
But, thats only my opinion...
