WHAT? No it wasn't. It was shot on 35mm film.

In fact, if you want to get technical, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy shot over 6 million feet of 35mm film, which amounts to 1100 miles.

Dude, you can tell which movies are shot on film, as opposed to digital, if you know what you are looking for. Digital movies have a harsh look to them, similar to a high end home video camera.
Go back and watch Avatar and look at the scenes that are shot in the laboratory......the harsh blue light looks incredibly staged and the set "LOOKS" like a set. In layman's terms, it's because digital cameras dont process light in the same way that film does and it looks a lot more fake. It is often described that digital is reality, while film is what you imagine. That is a pretty accurate description!

Another perfect example is the difference between The original Star Wars films vs. the (digitally shot) prequels.....episode II and episode III were digital.
In fact, just compare episode I vs. episode II, huge difference and the look of Ep II is terrible! Both movies sucked but at least episode I had the beautiful look of film.
Not only that but digital also enhances bad acting. Thats a fact.

The point that I am making here is that the continuity will be entirely lost if shot on digital.......so I hope Peter Jackson rethinks this and decides to shoot on film with a post 3D conversion.

But even if he doesn't I'm sure the films......movies will be great! I'm excited either way!

So awesome!!!! Cant wait!

Not liking that they are shooting it digitally, though. They should shoot it on film and do a great conversion so that their is continuity between The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit! Lets face it, digital looks like compete and utter crap compared to the beauty of film!

Regardless, this is going to be amazing! So pumped!

Great to have Peter in the directors chair....now I think we can all sleep at night!

This is YES. After all this waiting around, uncertain of whether the films would actually get made at all, we finally have an official green light and an incredible director at the helm.

Awesome news.
