Five years ago, while Peter Jackson was immersed in directing his large-scale remake of “King Kong” for Universal, executive Mary Parent mentioned a project the studio was developing based on the wildly popular video game “Halo.”
Jackson was intrigued. He loved to play “Halo” with his two teenage children; his special effects company, New Zealand-based WETA, seemed perfect to handle the FX; and a 15% tax rebate made a Kiwi shoot ideal for Universal and co-financier Fox. So Jackson agreed to produce, alongside his lifetime partner Fran Walsh and their colleague Carolynne Cunningham. Jackson would not direct, but he would find a promising young helmer to work under his supervision. I’ve been on the road non-stop since September 1, promoting my book Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks, and I have met many a fantasy and Tolkien fan as I’ve traveled from New York City to the South, the Midwest, around Boston and New England (my home) and the West Coast. I’m in Los Angeles now and have been reflecting on the meaning of Tolkien and his ground-breaking creation. Sometimes the dreams of Hollywood seem more distant than Middle-earth. Turbine has just released a new batch of screenshots for The Lord of the Rings Online: Siege of Mirkwood, the upcoming digital expansion to the award-winning MMO, which is scheduled to launch on December 1st in North America. The images depict the new Ashenslades region deep in the forests of Mirkwood.
Siege of Mirkwood will expand the online world of Middle-earth where players will join forces to press further eastward into the dark, foreboding and treacherous forest of Mirkwood and take part in the epic conclusion to Volume II of The Lord of the Rings Online. More..
