ROTK DVD Wins Four VSDA Awards

LAS VEGAS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–July 28, 2005–“Spider-Man 2” last night received VSDA’s 2005 DVD Technical Award for “Best Overall Presentation – Theatrical Release” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (Special Extended DVD Version)” received four awards for its DVD technology: Best Audio Presentation; Best Commentary; Best Menu Features; and Best Supplementary Materials.

VSDA’s 2005 DVD Technical Awards honor DVD titles that have demonstrated the most innovative and entertaining features through the use of the latest DVD technology. The awards were presented by the Video Software Dealers Association (VSDA) at VSDA’s Home Entertainment 2005, currently taking place at the Bellagio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. VSDA’s Home Entertainment 2005 is the annual convention of VSDA.

“The original material and technological innovations on DVDs have produced the most-creative material coming out of Hollywood today,” said Bo Andersen, President of VSDA. “We take great pride that these features are unique to home video and are thrilled to recognize and celebrate some of the best use of DVD technology.”

More than 150 DVD titles were submitted for award consideration. The winners were selected by a blue-ribbon panel of DVD reviewers.

Lord of the Rings spells doom and gloom for figure maker

The “boom and bust” stemming from New Zealand’s Lord of the Rings film trilogy has spelled doom and gloom for a global maker and seller of fantasy figures for battle games, Games Workshop. The company’s chief executive Tom Kirby told the Scotsman newspaper in Edinburgh: “For the last two years we have been concerned that, for Games Workshop, the Lord of the Rings business might create a bubble effect which might not be sustainable. “We have to confess we underestimated the impact which this would have on our sales and profits in the last quarter of this financial year,” he said. Blanchett joins Toronto festival lineup

TORONTO (AP) — Tales starring Cate Blanchett, Christian Bale, Nick Nolte and Robin Wright Penn are among the movies looking to grab Hollywood’s attention at North America’s biggest film festival. Nine additional movies were announced Tuesday for the Toronto International Film Festival, which runs Sept. 8-17. All the films will be seeking distributors at the festival, a prime spot for studios to acquire movies as well as show off key fall releases and Academy Award contenders. Blanchett stars with Sam Neill and Hugo Weaving in Little Fish, about a woman who becomes involved in a menacing drug deal while trying to raise money to open an Internet cafe. [More]

Not a bad ‘Hobbit’

VALPARAISO “You can’t pull this off,” Andrew Jones said to Zachary Gibson, when Gibson asked him to take part in a movie version of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit.” Jones, a huge Tolkien fan, told Gibson, “You can’t make those costumes. You can’t film this. You don’t have the money.” With a video camera he got for his 16th birthday and $2,000 of his own money, Gibson proved Jones wrong. It took him two years, but the 18-year-old managed to bring Tolkien’s classic to the big screen — or rather to DVD. [More]
