David Baxter writes: Hugo award winning science fiction author and futurist Vernor Vinge wrote a story in 1967 called “The Apprentice” where the protagonist stole computer time from a corporation in order to make a completely computer generated version of LOTR. It has been reprinted in “The Collected Stories of Vernor Vinge”. Fans should check it out. It’s short but sweet.
