Ringer Spy Andrew did some work on translating the writing you see on the Special Edition DVD menu:

“Did you notice the runes and tengwar on the DVD menu screenshots in the article on ign.com that has just been posted? Well, I decided to start working out what they said. Ignoring a few errors and inconsistencies, this is what I’ve got so far:

“The third image, with the tilted Play Movie menu, has runes above which say: There and back again, a hobbit’s tale. The tengwar writing below says Nine companions to match the nine ringwraiths. So be it – Elrond regards them – You shall be the fellowship of the ring!

“The sixteenth image, with the horizontal Play Movie menu, the runes at the top are still the same, but the writing at the bottom is now different, and reads Eleventy-one years is far too short a time to live among such excellent and admirable hobbits. I don’t know half (yes, it stops there).

“In the fourteenth picture is the most interesting bit of all: A loose sheet covered in tengwar is sitting on the left-hand page of the book, and it turns out that this is Galadriel’s Namarie poem, written in Quenya, and modelled closely on Tolkien’s own calligraphy of it in The Road Goes Ever On !”
