This is from the Irish paper Sunday Independent. On page 2, right bang in the centre of the page is an article about Cate Blanchett (Galadriel) doing the Veronica Guerin film.

There is also a photograph but not from LOTR. I’ve no scanner so this is the best I can do. I must do my bit for the TORNadoes, right?

Here’s the transcript:

BLANCHETT FOR VERONICA FILM

Cate Blanchett, the Australian film star, was in Dublin last week to discuss her role as Veronica Guerin in the Joel Schumacher movie which will begin shooting next February. (Heavily pregnant Cate’s next project, her baby, is due in December.)

What drew the acclaimed star of Elizabeth and The Talented Mr. Ripley towards the role of the ed Sunday Independent journalist was that Veronica “obviously was a unique and extraordinary life force and that was interesting within the world of journalism and crime detectives”.

The most prominent Australian in Hollywood next to Nicole Kidman said that Veronica Guerin’s life showed “incredible bravery”. Anyone who was prepared to put themselves on the line for what they believed in was admirable and rare, she said. And though five years had passed since Veronica’s there was “still an enormous amount of pain; people must miss her energy. She pushed the boundaries of crime reporting and stepped on a lot of toes.”

“The story is incredibly controversial,” said Blanchett. “You get the sense that people are very protective and defensive and that they have a sense of ownership of the memory of Veronica”.

It was something similar to what she found when playing Queen Elizabeth in the film Elizabeth, she said. “Iconic women like Veronica, and like Elizabeth, are much claimed and owned in our history and so it’s an enormous responsibility to play her”.

Having just finished Bandits with Billy Bob Thornton and Bruce Willis, to say nothing of Lord of the Rings, Blanchett is one of the busiest women in Hollywood. Her research on Veronica’s life, nonetheless, she says, will be tireless.
