Just a few more things before I head out to work. (May the Gods of restauranting be nice to me tonight), I’ve had another chat with the Maia spirit known as ‘ScriptDoctor’, whis is what he has to say:
Yes, he’s (DDL) refused, and he’s actually quite angry that they keep offering him the part…
…Townsend was NOT creating problems for anyone..
…he was sacked because PJ actually did come to believe that he was wrong for Aragorn, and the execs were in full agreement (though for different reasons)…
‘ScriptDoctor’ also believes that Townsend was ‘let go’ and did not quit. And that Daniel Day-Lewis will NEVER bring up this affair. DDL did not care for the Money or the fame, and just wanted no part of these films. π

Harry, over at AICN confirms that Viggo Mortensen has accepted the role of Aragorn. I guess this means DDL turned down the role again. Let the Message boards explode…

News has reached me from another VERY reliable source that Daniel Day-Lewis has been offered the role of Aragorn, again. If you didn’t know, DDL was offered the role back at the beginning of Pre-Production, but turned it down. (The guys at Barliman’s new this, I let things slip there sometimes)
This is what Super Ringer Spy ‘ScriptDoctor’ Told me:
DDL has been offered the Aragorn role again! Everyone will deny this but it is fact. He has been offered the (Middle) earth to take the role. The producers think he’ll say no again but they don’t want to miss the chance to try him.
Townsend was always very much his (PJ’s) choice (after DDL turned them down); the producers were never keen on him but PJ insisted on having him. It seems, now, that PJ just thinks he is wrong for the role, a verdict with which the producers were only to happy to concur. So, it suits everyone , except poor Townsend, to bring someone else in..
So it seems that not all is set in stone? What do you think about this? Why not make your voice heard at Barliman’s or on the message board!

Mortensen negotiating to replace “Rings” lead
By Charles Lyons and Claude Brodesser
HOLLYWOOD (Variety) – One week into principal photography, New Line Cinema’s “Lord of the Rings” has lost a principal.
Stuart Townsend (“All About Adam,” “Wonderland”), who had sitgned to play the role of Strider/Aragorn, has left the production. Viggo Mortensen is in negotiations to replace him.
While the studio has not confirmed his departure nor given an official reason for it, sources close to the New Zealand production told Daily Variety that director Peter Jackson and Townsend didn’t see eye to eye about the role; others said they believed that Townsend was exiting because he lacked the star power to carry off the part.
Mortensen has appeared in such films as “G.I. Jane,” “A Perfect Murder,” “Portrait of a Lady” and “Vanishing Point.”
Representatives for New Line were unavailable for comment late Thursday.

Viggo may not be officially cast, but this is how vigilant we are! Viggo’s latest, ‘A Walk on the Moon’ a romance/drama also starring Diane Lane, and Anna Paquin has been released today in Italy.
Viggo plays Walker Jerome, described as ‘a hippie…who has the charisma to sweep Pearl (Diane Lane) from her feet’

My cool friends over at Cinescape sent me this along today:
Just letting you know that we checked in with New Line’s Michale DeLuca on the specifics regarding Townsend’s leaving the LOTR production. DeLuca quickly replied with the following simply answer: ” It’s not over any other names, just director/actor creative chemistry.”
Thanks to The Cinescape Insider for the tip!
