The Desolation of Smaug was a much bigger improvement of AUJ. As soon as the opening scene finishes, the audience is thrust straight into a decent chase scene. From there it gets even better. Forty five minutes in we watch an iconic scene: the barrel escape. We see dwarves fight orcs, elves fight orcs and Legolas showing off naturally. One thing I didn't like about some of these action sequences were how terrible at fighting Orcs are. Throughout the film Legolas kills around 45 orcs, let alone Tauriel and the dwarves. Howard Shore's swirling score is great, not as good as AUJ but still excellent. The acting is again spot on. Even though he is slightly sidelined in the first half of the movie, Martin Freeman sines throughout. Richard Armitage and Benedict Cumberbatch are the other standouts.
One thing I would like to say is that Beorn in the beginning has very few lines and scenes. I know the extended cut has more, but in the theatrical cut the audience hardly knew much about him and he will be a vital player in the next film im sure.
The length of the film was shorter then before but means we get a longer extended cut ;). Overall, the acting and the music and the great special effects are worth seeing this film.
