Obviously this films departs quite a bit from the book. But since it's a film based on a novel, I'm totally fine with the changes. In fact, i believe the story has become far more interesting with the addition of relatable characters as well as stories from The Appendices. But i don't feel i need to talk about plot with you all. You have all seen it by now and know. I was taken back the first time I watched it, but the second viewing proved to me that this is a very entertaining piece with excellent visualisation, stunning audio and impeccable execution in almost every field. It is always a pleasure to watch films from this group of people, as you really get a sense that they love making movies and make the movie that they wish to see themselves!! I have to admit, that i applaud the decision of HFR…. What a beautiful format!! A little strange at first, as you need to get used to how clear and realistically everything moves, but what a treat! I really do hope this becomes a standard for shooting modern movies. A real game-changer. I have to give respect to PJ for being courageous enough to do this!! I'm just so happy that there are filmmakers out there willing to take steps like this. For me, this is the biggest thing, because, i have to say, "The Desolation Of Smaug" (along with An Unexpected Journey) is THE best looking film i have ever seen. It is being shunned by the awards community, but that is just them being shortsighted. This film will be remembered and revered. It's a shame that this movie sets such a high standard, now all other movies somehow fall short…. Looking forward to what the future will bring to the movies…………………….Eönwë
