"The Desolation of Smaug" is, by far, in my opinion, the best of all Peter Jackson's Tolkien films. My sister and my Mom and I have been avid fans of "The Lord of the Rings" films. We were a little hesitant to see "The Hobbit", because we were sure they wouldn't be as wonderful as LotR. Boy, were we wrong! We LOVED the first part of "The Hobbit" (better than LotR, actually, if you can believe that!), but this second installment is even better. We've already been to the theater to see it five times.
Peter Jackson's directing and the editing is AMAZING! In fact, I wished that I could have rated the editing with 10 Rings. The heroes are so much better this time around. The men are manly and not afraid to get in there and fight. Every dwarf is fabulous, and it will take a long time to see every little detail. Legolas has only improved with the passing of a decade. He is great. Tauriel may not be in the book, but she is a fabulous addition to the cast of characters. Bard is portrayed just perfectly, I think, as is Beorn. Wow! Beorn's Swedish accent was a brilliant bit of casting. Smaug is a Cinematic achievement that all the folks at Weta should be proud of. He looks real. Thorin is fabulous, and he doesn't have a bad line or moment. I think that the real award should go to Martin Freeman as Bilbo. He has to be one of the greatest actors that ever lived --- not to mention the greatest Hobbit of all time! All in all, I couldn't recommend this film enough. Now to wait for the DVD . . .
