Film Format Seen? 3D 48 fps
Will view again in a different format? Yes
I've seen it twice in HFR 3D and once in 2D. I like it in both formats and it seems like the HFR is better this time...I didn't feel strange and it didn't look too real, like a soap opera set. I have posted comments already so many will know my views...I had issues the first time....not enough Beorn and Mirkwood and more invented scenes, Thorin standing on Smaug's nose, the heat from Smaug's fire not melting dwarf flesh...but I had issues the first time I saw FOTR...no Bombadil, Arwen absorbed Glorfindal, etc.
Once I relax and recognize PJ's vision for the story, after a couple viewings, accepting that the movie is not a scene by scene recreation of the precious books (they're mine!) I really enjoy it and can't wait for the spiders, Bombur's barrel ride, Legolas and Tauriel battling orcs, and Smaug.... I still jumped and gripped my chair the third time seeing Smaug and Bilbo interact...Smaug is the scariest dragon on film and Benedict Cumberbatch was fantastic! Thorin, Balin, and the dwarves just keep getting better, Beorn is awesome, Bard is great as is the Master of Laketown...Thranduil is fantastically arrogant, and Legolas has yet to evolve in his acceptance and understanding of dwarf culture. But he still sticks it to orcs... I like Tauriel! I don't think she has a thing for dwarves, she is being exposed to a wider world through them, and is questioning the racist, isolationist stance of her people. She will influence Legolas. And I got over any comparison to Arwen... Just like in AUJ, after several viewings I notice new things....the scenery, costumes, etc. Bifur does it again! When the dwarves are climbing out of the barrels covered with fish....there's a fish stuck on the axe that's stuck in his head! Just the axe in the head cracks me up...in AUJ when the dwarves are in Rivendell and Bofur tosses a sausage to Bombur, causing his table to break...just before that Bifur holds up a head of some leafy lettuce to the fire and tries to cook it...and he's serious! Love it.... So, people in the audience each time freaked out at the abrupt ending...I liked it, figuring that with three movies Smaug's death would occur in the third...and I look forward to that, the battle of the five armies, driving Sauron from Dol Gulder, and the resolution of the tale....death will come for favorite characters, which could rival the scenes of Boromir and Theoden... I hope I can see it a couple more times in the theater....
