Great film, based on a great book. Perfect...no, but a heck of allot better than that old Hobbit cartoon. Here is the thing, it was the perfect sequel and set up a strong conclusion. Faster paced with less character development than the first film (which is what was needed) while introducing us to additional quests, additional characters (some familiar, some not)and lots of drama...and now we wait till the last part, I for one will have a hard time with that, the wait. What they did was make a prequel to an already made world (LOR)based off of a short and simple children's novel and a few scraps of information form the Silmarilion (Could be the white jewels the elf king was asking about...the actual Silmarilion jewels)and from the other indexes as well as from their own knowledge of the middle earth universe in order to make it work. Think of how much better movies are when they set out to be made in a set of three (first movie is plot and character development, second sets up the cliff hanger..usually with the bad guys getting the upper hand and third is the conclusion where the good guys defy the odds and seize the day, ie Star Wars 4,5 and 6 as well as 1,2 and 3 (although not as good) and of course the LOR. This is the best way to tell a modern story and really bring it to life...sure PJ had to stretch it our with extra stuff, that is the only real way to have done it justice, the only way it could have stood up next to LOR. I am happy to put up with its faults, just so I can see it's conclusion...and I am hoping for some sort of extended version as well (although I don't know where they will get the material from...it is already pretty extended....and I love it!
