 Rings!

Completely torn in two by this movie. There were elements I liked, and things I absolutely hated. In general, I felt the movie was WAY overdone and would have been much better if it stuck to the book a bit more. I realize changes have to be made to flesh it out visually on the big screen, but some of this was just ridiculous. Peter Jackson tries way too hard to tie this film into Lord of the Rings. You don't need the smack the movie goer across the face with it. The fans get subtlety.

Good Points:
The Thorin backstory in Bree. That was successful in establishing the urgency of The Quest. A nice nod to the Unfinished Tales. Also good was the inclusion of the Dol Goldur story. Excellent job illustrating the disembodied Necromancer. Consistently excellent was Martin Freeman. Luke Evans as bard was perfect. He had a very warm character! I liked Tauriel to a point and will explain further. I also applaud their work with Smaug! Best cinematic dragon evar… as it should be!

Bad Points:
Kili/Tauriel love story: COMPLETELY unnecessary and insulting! Too much stolen from Arwen and Aragorn in LOTR. Kili being deathly injured was annoying. Breaking the Company in two…even worse!!! Beorn didn't look like bear! What's up with that?! His character was completely short changed in this movie. Adding Bolg. Again, completely unnecessary! Pick an Orc villain and stick with it. The Dwarves attempting to kill Smaug totally took away from our hero, THE HOBBIT. Speaking of which, why did Bilbo take the ring off so often???! The ring wasn't strong enough to affect him in the book. UGH.

I was SO looking forward to this movie, but I feel like it was a hot mess. I really hope when they put the extended version out that they do a ton of editing. I'm sorry, Peter Jackson missed the boat for the first time for me. I'm worried about the third film now.
