I will say this for the Desolation of Smaug: it is fantastically acted, well-conceived and beautifully realized. What it is not, however, is "The Hobbit." Gone is any effort to keep this child-friendly, like the trolls and Goblin king in UJ; this is an LOTR prequel through and through. I found myself struggling, at times, to decide which was darker: This, or the Two Towers. If you're a die-hard fan of the books, go prepared for disappointment, because PJ has deviated wildly from the book, giving Bard his own major subplot, and creating the most bizarre love triangle conceivable between Tauriel, Legolas, and Kili. Tauriel in particular feels like a cheap knockoff of Arwen in places, which I found mildly insulting. I was also upset to see the ring exerting so negative an influence on Bilbo this early in the game, contrary to the supposed "resilience of Hobbits."
Setting all that aside, however, the movie is an action-packed thrill from start to finish. Violent, certainly; but also comic, gripping, and overall epic fun. Despite the fact I know the story, they've STILL managed to pull an exceptional cliffhanger ending. So, great movie in its own right, and I believe everyone can enjoy it; However, hard-core fans would be wise to forget all about the book before watching.
