As action-packed adventure movies go, this movie definitely comes out as one of the best. But being an adaptation of Tolkien's "The Hobbit", it doesn't come out as fulfilling. The first half of the film feels true to the Tolkien/PJ Middle-Earth we've come to know in previous movies. Beorn is superbly portrayed, as is Mirkwood and the spiders. The Elven realm rings true, with king Thranduil as haughty as expected. Even the barrel ride is great. But when we land in Lake-Town things start to change, although the town itself is beautifully done. First subtly, but then more and more obviously, until we reach the point when the feeling of being transported to a totally different world is upon me. And that happens particularly during two scenes: the fight scene with Thorin actually standing on the nose of the dragon, and the gold statue bursting over Smaug. Two totally unfitting and unworthy additions to an otherwise fantastic rendering of the dragon encounter. Smaug is as perfect as a dragon can be. The ending brings back the mystery, mostly through Martin Freeman's extraordinary acting, as seen through the entire movie. The end song is very uninspiring, and strengthens the feeling of not actually seen a Middle-Earth film, but just an ordinary action movie. A shame when seen in the light of the otherwise once more great soundtrack by Howard Shore.
