Film Format Seen? 2D 24 fps
Will view again in a different format? Yes

I first saw the film opening weekend in 2d 24fps. Then I followed it up with 3d 48fps. The initial reaction I had was, "It was a great movie by Hollywood standards, but it sure wasn't my 8th grade teacher's Hobbit." All of the things that came out of the Hobbit book were fantastic.

But all the extra stuff was pure Hollywood, and there were parts that made me laugh out loud and go, "yeah, right". These included Legolas hopping around on top of the Dwarves' heads while fighting orcs in the barrel riding scene, and the love story between Tauriel and Kili.

That love story was cute and tolerable enough, but there were two things in this movie that went too far. First, adding in that bit about the morgul arrowhead and re-using the kingsfoil/glowing elf healer sequence from the Lord of the Rings was too obvious and should have been rewritten into something more generic that didn't copy FOTR. Second, Gandalf getting taken prisoner in Dol Guldur, while cool cinematically, still felt too much like a copy of him being taken prisoner by Saruman in FOTR.
But aside from those two items, and the somewhat excessive use of Legolas, I quite enjoyed the film. Even that part about firing up the bellows and smelting the giant gold statue was a fairly believable extrapolation of the story, even if the action sequences that it took to accomplish it were way overdone (Thorin riding a wheelbarrow down a channel of molten gold and then balancing on Smaug's snout? Yeah, right!!)
