The movie had its hits and misses. Starting with the misses;
- The cg's were quite terrible and I've seen it in 2d, imax 3d and hfr 3d. Thinking of the flowing gold makes me sick to my stomach, it looked like a terrible commercial for velveeta cheese. When I'm so used to PJ making films with amazing graphics, why would you cheap out on the parts that could have blown people away? -Were they using a go-pro camera for the underwater shots of the dwarves in barrels? (It was so distracting that I couldn't stop thinking about it) -Beorn looked like a Warg. Why? -Plot changes were all over the place and this movie isn't the greatest for the Tolkien purist seeing as how it is very different from the book and appendixes. VERY! -Tauriel and Kili are extremely distracting. Hits; -Tauriel's character was awesome and even though she doesn't belong, I liked her within a couple of seconds of her scenes. She is pretty freaking awesome! -SMAUG! Personally, that's what I was waiting for and it was delivered. He is truly magnificent! -The Woodland realm was amazing and Thranduil is so perfectly played by Lee Pace. Beorn is perfectly portrayed as well (just wish they had more of both of them). Seeing as how I like to judge the films separately, DOS can stand on its own, but it lacked the moments that made you cheer on the dwarves (besides Balin, cause he made me ball when the door to Erebor was opened. Major feels). There was something missing, or maybe it was the derailment from the book or the sudden ending, but it was different from what I expected. One thing it certainly has done, and maybe this was PJ's intentions, was make me anxious to see how certain things will be resolved in TABA. All in all, I liked it, not loved but liked.
