'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug' was a fantastic film with a lot of action and plot.
I particularly enjoyed the start of the movie where Peter Jackson revisits Bree (once again tying this in with when the Hobbit Frodo and his companions, sixty years later, arrive here). There were some very amusing scenes like when Bombur crashes into Beorn's door to open it but gets sent backwards [all they had to do was undo the lock], in Mirkwood when they lose the path, Bofur's "By my beard, IS THAT THE TIME!?", and Bilbo's confrontation with the polite dragon Smaug - "Who are you and where do you come from, may I ask?" "You have nice manners for a thief and a liar" And there were also very serious scenes, especially when Kili is injured, when Gandalf gets "captured" by Sauron, and when Smaug is going to attack the innocent people of Lake-Town. I thought overall the movie had you at the edge of your seat, with its suspense - I particularly felt that way when Bilbo says "What have we done?" and the screen fades to black - but I thought perhaps they had stretched out the film too much so that they could keep the best for the next movie, so I felt that there wasn't really any arc to this story. It has been a pleasure watching it, and I hope the third film is going to be the "cherry on the cake" topping the story off nicely [but, perhaps, bittersweetly - but I shan't say anymore for those who have not read the book...]
