The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is an excellent film and a fantastic experience.

The prologue type flashback is incredible.
The pacing of each scene is wonderful as expected. Beorn moment is shorter than expected, barrels longer. I'll need to view again to give a more detailed review.

I applaud Peter Jackson & co. especially for set design, costumes and props. Only mildly disappointed in Smaug being more Wyvern in appearance. I prefer Smaug with four legs and independent wing function, rather than wing arms. The fire inside was like the Balrog's inner flames.

Highlights are:

Everything with Gandy and Radagast. Spiders, losing bearings in Mirkwood, Legolas and T. skirmish, barrel escape, Legolas weilding Orcrist, Bard helping out, although I question the propulsion of his barge being a heavy craft, Bilbo and the Dwarves are always delightful. The Elven burn scar reveal was interesting and a nice touch. Happy there were more orcs and wargs. Tauriel is the fun addition and very well done, she's really good.
Bilbo using Sting was done well. Bilbo and the wizards had the best parts in the movie, the coolest events and moments. Also interesting to find the other expedition to Erebor, they ran out of oxygen because Smaug's fire burned up their air.

Dwarves did not engage in a more conventional combat with Smaug, not even one desperate assault, to show once more how powerful and dangerous their ancient enemy is in Middle Earth.

Maybe the treasure was a little to clean? Also, how about finding some remains of questing knights and other adventurers? Where are the bones, weapon stacks from the armoury, junk pile and Smaug's food and water source? -or remains of stockpiled animals and things.

And, it would have been nice if Bard showed some of his archery skill in some way.

(Might have been cool to see the gang use Bard's
lesser quality weapons and gear, but then it may fall under overkill.)

Plus, standing on heads is very weird, but at least
Dwarves are strong and very sturdy creatures. One did walk on top of the other in AUJ as well.
Legolas would have looked better to have remained on the river banks, but might have been less safe. Love his fighting though and appeared more rugged in his youth, before being more refined when meeting Gimli, which was super-cool awesomeness. Some of the other characters really did steal the show, this time, from the 13 and Bilbo. In conclusion,
camera work, lighting composition, feel, look, tone, threading, audio, picture quality, FX and sound effects, scenery, acting etc. all outstanding, magnificent, highly creative, imaginative story telling and a superb timeless artwork and a great, top notch, one of a kind film.
High Adventure! I love the movie.

Thank you,
