I greatly enjoyed most aspects of this film. It's not the same as the book, but there's no way they could make an entertaining film from the brief scenes in the book as described by Tolkien. We would have had an hour or more of Bilbo and company wandering around in Mirkwood and being imprisoned by the elves. Then maybe only five or ten minutes of Smaug. The dwarves' throw down with Smaug was not in hue book, but who cares? We got a lot more of Smaug than we would have otherwise - and that can only be a good thing!!

The only thing that I really didn't like was the implied flirting and budding "romance" between Tauriel and Kili. Not only is it totally unrealistic considering the history between the elves and dwarves, but it just felt forced and dragged things out unnecessarily. Every time those two started making google eyes at each other, I was pulled out of the movie and had to roll my eyes in disbelief. Whether that stuff comes from Peter Jackson or Phillipa Boyens, I don't know. But it was totally pointless and not needed in this story, and I really hope they keep that stuf to a minimum in the last film. To be fair, I didn't mind Tauriel as a character at all. But there's no reason to try and force a pointless romance between her and a dwarf, which has no chance of working anyway.

Otherwise I think the film was great, and I can't wait to see it again!
