It's all about viewer mindset. If you go in expecting to see something you've seen before, (especially LOTR) you may well be disappointed. If you go in expecting to see something made for mass audiences rather than fans, you may well be disappointed.

But if you make the conscious decision to accept that The Hobbit is going to be like nothing you've ever seen before, and thus you need to just go with it and enjoy the ride, you may well leave the theater in awe with an enormous smile. I know I did. Go in with an open mind, and it'll knock your socks off.
