My overwhelming emotion on leaving the cinema was one of relief! Relief that PJ et al hadn't 'done a Star Wars' and literally lost the plot under a welter of special effects, relief that the expansion of the plot beyond the original book of The Hobbit made sense and relief that my expectations hadn't been too high. I loved the film and relished the familiarity of visiting old friends and old haunts whilst also enjoying the new characters and exploits. Martin Freeman IS Bilbo - I can't imagine anyone else in the role. Ian McKellen and Richard Armitage were also outstanding amongst an excellent cast.

My next (and subsequent) viewings will be a different experience. Now that I know that 'all is well', I can relax and immerse myself in the sweeping scenery, the exquisite detail of the design and appreciate all the things I will have missed first time.
