I came out of the movie thinking mainly that what I just saw was charming. I thought that this was appropriate, because at its heart, The Hobbit is a children's story. The Lord of the Rings is a much darker story, and a lot of what makes The Hobbit so good is its levity. I thought this was done quite well. I didn't like the added "white orc" subplot though--I found it a little stretched. Overall, I thought it was a good film with a good tone, that was just a little too long.
