Blanchett tipped for Oscar nod

Cate Blanchett's portrayal of Veronica Guerin is set to earn her an Oscar nomination, according to film industry experts. Movie magazine Screen International last week tipped Australian Blanchett, 34, to be one of those battling it out to win the Best Actress gong at the Academy Awards next February.

The magazine believes Blanchett's nomination is a certainty thanks to her "flawless Irish accent and awards-tailored performance". It wrote: "The film is already a huge hit in Ireland and has a powerful Hollywood pedigree behind it in producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Joel Schumacher.

"But it is Cate Blanchett as the crusading journalist who will make the awards' cut."

Blanchett was previously nominated as Best Actress for her role in Elizabeth in 1997. Veronica Guerin the movie attracted record audiences in cinemas around Ireland.
