A Slight Case of Murder (1999) William H. Macy earned an Emmy nomination for his pitch-perfect performance as a TV film critic who covers up the accidental death -- or was is a murder -- of his secret lover. Before he knows it, a private detective (James Cromwell) blackmails him with evidence that pins him to the scene of the crime and the investigating detective (Alan Arkin) keeps him close… the better to slip him his screenplay. All the while he keeps a running commentary of audience asides to share his insights on how to get away with murder, while a series of film noir film clips acts as a chorus. Macy also scripts the comic murder mystery, an adaptation of the Donald E. Westlake novel, with director Steven Schachter (they also collaborated on the tele-films The Wool Hat and Door to Door), and Felicity Huffman co-stars. Details: Color, 94 mins, Warner, Widescreen anamorphic, 1.85:1. Audio: English (Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround). Optional Spanish and French subtitles.

American Blackout Most people have heard of the voting irregularities that marred the presidential elections of 2000 and 2004. Some even know of the resulting challenges to the electoral votes by African-American congressional representatives. However, because the mainstream media shies away from reporting cases of imperiled democracy the public is left to believe these stories are at worst insignificant rumors or at best one-off incidents that result from an overburdened election system. American Blackout chronicles the recurring patterns of disenfranchisement witnessed from 2000 to 2004 while following the story of Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, who not only took an active role in investigating these election debacles but also found herself in the middle of one after publicly questioning the Bush Administration about the 9-11 terrorist attacks. Some call Cynthia McKinney a civil rights leader among the ranks of Shirley Chisholm and Malcolm X. Others call her a conspiracy theorist and a "looney." American Blackout gains unprecedented access to one of the most controversial and dangerous politicians in America and examines the contemporary tactics used to control our democratic process and silence political dissent.

Dead Zone (1983) David Cronenberg trades the visceral queasiness of his disease horror for a somber mood piece (you can feel the chill in the air) in his first adaptation. Christopher Walken, the cinema's sleepy-eyed master of low key creepiness, is the everyman schoolteacher who wakes from a five year coma with a gift for second sight that comes in battering shocks. Dracula: 75th Anniversary Edition (1931) Tod Browning's inimitable classic may not be the definitive version of Bram Stoker's novel -- it's creaky, stiff, and often stagy -- but it's easily the most famous, a veritable cultural touchstone and it will remain memorable for its gorgeous gothic images, for Lugosi's legendary, iconic performance, and for setting off the cinematic fascination with vampires. This edition features an option to watch the film accompanied by Philip Glass' lovely, lush music (performed by the Kronos Quartet), which smoothes out Browning's direction and drenches the numerous wordless passages in mood, but becomes distracting during dialogue scenes. Also features Dracula: Spanish Version (1931), which was shot at night on the same sets as the Lugosi classic by Brownin protégé George Melford. This is often cited as a superior version for its smooth, elegant camerawork, atmospheric mood, striking compositions, startling close-ups, and astonishingly sexy heroine (Lupita Tovar). In fact, it's only weakness is a lumpy Dracula (Carlos Villar'as). Details: Black and White, 75 mins, Universal, Academy Ratio, 1.33:1. Supplements: Commentary by film historian David J. Gene Autry Collection, Cowboy Kid Mary Lee, Vol. 3 Back In The Saddle: Dust off your best cowboy hat and polish up your spurs as America's first and favorite singing cowboy gallops across the silver screen into your living room. Gene Autry, star of radio, records, film, TV and rodeo, invented the musical Western, capturing America's hearts as a guitar-slinging, song-singing, six gun-toting good guy. Riding Champion, the World's Wonder Horse, Autry became a beloved American hero whose popularity remains strong today. Now, for the first time on DVD, Gene Autry's rollicking big screen adventures and unforgettable tunes are brought home in these Western classics fully restored and uncut from Autry's personal film archives. When pollution from a nearby copper mine poisons hundreds of cattle, two-fisted ranch foreman Autry faces a heap of trouble from all sides. Features Gene's signature song and his lovable sidekick, Smiley Burnette. Ride, Tenderfoot, Ride:Cowboy Gene Autry inherits the Belmont Packing Company and the management duties that come with it. When a rival company owned by a pretty socialite plots to force Gene to sell, a feud soon ensues between the lady, who uses her womanly wiles to take business from Gene, and the cowboy who tries to recover by using old-time rally methods, including parades and bands. Rancho Grande: Gene Autry is the foreman of a ranch mortgaged to the hilt with a fast approaching deadline to build a dam. When the owner dies and leaves the Rancho Grande to his three madcap grandchildren, Gene must straighten out the rebellious young folks and make them work to pay off the debt and foil the villains. It will take brawn, brains, and of course a few songs, to uncover the secret plot to take over Rancho Grande. Melody Ranch:Lawlessness runs rampant in Gene's hometown of Torpedo until the movie and radio cowboy returns as Honorary Sheriff for a Frontier Days celebration and cleans up the town! Featuring Jimmy Durante, Ann Miller, and such classics like "We Never Dream the Same Dream Twice" and the title song, this musical was Gene's biggest theatrical production upon its release and remains one of his best-remembered big screen journeys!

Indian Territory:Gene Autry discards his conventional cowboy garb and white Stetson for the blue uniform of a sergeant in the post-Civil War Cavalry in this 1950 film. The Apaches have been incited to raid the ranchers and homesteaders on the Western frontier by the Apache Kid and Curt Raidler, a renegade Austrian, who wishes to use the Indians to build himself an empire in America. Masters of Horror: Takashi Miike - Imprint Japanese maverick genre director Takashi Miike's contribution to the cable horror anthology turned out to be too extreme even for pay cable -- it was never broadcast and makes its debut here on DVD. Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Ultimate Edition (1974) The saw is family in Tobe Hooper's brutal, brilliant debut film, a grungy, grisly horror about a perverse Texas cannibal clan (inspired by the story of Ed Gein) and the teenagers that wander into their home (decorated in furniture constructed from human bones) and their meathooks. Shot in the cheap with a primitive look that belies the craft put into it, the film earns its garish title and notorious reputation, notably with the almost pure savagery of the film's poster-boy Leatherface (Gunnar Hansen), the devoted mute son who wields the chainsaw under a mask of human flesh. It's unrelenting and unforgettable and its raw gore remains its strongest element. Along with Night of the Living Dead and The Last House on the Left, it ushered in the modern age of horror in the 1970s. The new edition has been newly remastered in high definition from the 16mm ECO camera originals, and features newly remixed soundtracks in addition to the restored original mono soundtrack.
