HM Publishes 'The Hobbit' With Goodies - Xoanon @ 10:18 PST
NEW EDITION OF THE HOBBIT TO FEATURE JACKET ART BY J.R.R. TOLKIEN HIMSELF

This summer, Houghton Mifflin is pleased to be publishing a brand-new edition of J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic novel The Hobbit, featuring jacket art by the author.

Written for Tolkien’s own children, The Hobbit met with instant critical acclaim when first published more than sixty years ago. Now recognized as a timeless classic with sales of more than 40 million copies worldwide, this introduction to Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf the Wizard, and the spectacular world of Middle-earth tells of the adventures of a reluctant hero, a powerful and dangerous ring, and the cruel dragon Smaug the Magnificent.

The text of this edition of The Hobbit has been meticulously restored by the scholar Douglas A. Anderson so that Tolkien’s last known intentions are faithfully honored. The book has been entirely reset in an easy-to-read typeface, and Tolkien’s own black and-white illustrations and maps are reproduced.

This new edition for young readers also includes the first chapter of The Fellowship of the Ring. Official publication date is August 1, but look for the book in stores in early July.
