Daniel alerted us to this impressive undertaking: Have you heard of Patrick Action, the matchstick man of Iowa? He is currently working on a large model of Minas Tirith and it should be completed by the end of 2009. The link to his website is below. The second link is to a St. Paul, Minnesota TV station that did a 5 minute story on the Matchstick man. It is well worth watching.

Here is a link to Patrick’s site Matchstick Marvels.com with more pictures of his Minas Tirith model, and a link to the news story about Patrick. Check it out.

Del Toro To Fly Solo In Directing “The Hobbit”

Del Toro Jackson

Del Toro Jackson

During an interview posted on the MTV Movie Blog, Guillermo Del Toro was asked if he would be interested in Peter Jackson directing a scene in “The Hobbit” should the LOTR director have an opportunity to do so. Del Toro agrees that Jackson has certainly earned that right but added a clarification by saying:

“We talked about it. I normally oppose fully the idea of second unit so my first instinct is no, we will not have second unit on this film,” Del Toro said of whether or not Jackson might at some point get behind the camera. “If there is a scheduling conflict or a problem of that sort, we may consider it, but right now the idea is I shoot everything.”

Doug Jones Talks a little more on The Hobbit.

Doug Jones recently spoke in an exclusive interview with Eric Walsingham from Fear.net on ‘Quarantine’ ‘Frankenstein’ and a little about his possible appearance in ‘The Hobbit Movie’.

We were on the red carpet of the Saturn Awards, in the press line on the way in and Guillermo came up and joined in an interview that I was already doing on camera.  The journalist said, “Oh Guillermo, what do you have for Doug in The Hobbit?” and put a microphone in his face, and we hadn’t talked about it yet.  I said, “This ought to be interesting.

Thanks to Compa Mighty for the heads up on the MTV Blog by Shawn Adler. Guillermo del Toro talks about the current progession on the Hobbit Movies …

The reality is that we stopped talking the first movie and second movie, and we just started taking about the movie - the two episodes, or two parts, as if they were a single piece of narrative,” he said of scriptwriting meetings between “Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson, his filmmaking team of Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, and del Toro himself.

GdT: “Hobbit Scripting Maybe Done By The Change of the Year”

The Hobbit Script is coming together MagicallyGreat news from the MTV Movie Blog today. We know that scripting has started on the Hobbit by the Fabulous Four - Jackson, del Toro, Walsh and Boyens, but news on the progress has been scarce. So its great to hear Guillermo give details of how things are coming along:

First thing is, sometimes we get all together in the same space or we all are in video conferencing. And those are sessions that can last two, three days,” del Toro said, opening up for the first time about the nuts-and-bolts aspect of the collaboration. “But after that, it’s almost like we take turns to a degree — or we each get big, big homework to do and then we come back. And then we exchange that homework and then we have input from that.

GDT Makes Esquire’s “75 Most Influential” List

According to Esquire.com: “It’s easy to dismiss the big, bushy-bearded director as just another grown-up fanboy with a brilliant knack for CGI.” What we want to know is: why would anyone dismiss him for that? That’s exactly why all us fanboys and girls love the guy! The 21st Century may be relatively new, but Del Toro making such a list is a very big deal. He joins a prestigious list that includes architects, diplomats, entrepreneurs and more. So, our congratulations go out to our favorite bushy-bearded fanboy. Thanks to diedye for the tip. Read More
