IN their 1996 film "Forgotten Silver," the directors Peter Jackson and Costa Botes tell the story of Colin McKenzie, a plucky New Zealander who, as a young man in the early years of the 20th century, built a bicycle-powered movie camera, with which he captured history's first tracking shot and made his own film stock out of flax leaves.
