Celtic LOTR CD Postponed

Celtic Band, 'The Border Collies' had plans to release a CD taking the songs within the text of the LOTR and setting them and arranging them in a Celtic style, using their own orginal songs and tunes. However HarperCollins, Tolkien's UK publisher has clamped down a "moratorium" on ALL new projects. According to thebordercollies.com, '[HarperCollins] sound final and indefinite in their correspondence.' So sadly they have delayed the release of that CD. [More]

Bean Takes 'Flight'

The Hollywood Reporter says that Sean Bean is in talks to star in Touchstone Pictures/Imagine Entertainment's highflying Hitchcockian thriller "Flight Plan," opposite Jodie Foster and Peter Sarsgaard. "Flight" follows the in-air plight of a woman (Foster) whose daughter mysteriously disappears while on board a passenger jet. [More]

Hobbit Spotted on Antiques Roadshow

LadyGreenleaf writes: I watched a bit of the Antiques Roadshow UK. There was a man, who was the 'expert', and a lady, who was the guest, with a bunch of papers and a book. The papers turned out to be letters from C.S. Lewis, that had apparantely been written to a family member of hers. There was a five-page handwritten one, and another one that was three pages long, but I didn't see if it was handwritten or just typed. [More]

Recently, we began the implementation of a portal using Oracle, and we had to name the server. So, in honor of his journey to Mount Doom, and for saving Middle Earth, the server has been named “Frodo.” “frodo.utm.edu” will soon be a permanent fixture to our online presence. Mammoth set for Jackson's Kong

A 10-metre-high wall of King Kong-sized building blocks has gone up to create a backdrop for Peter Jackson's latest NZ$200 million movie. Filming is due to start next month on Jackson's remake of King Kong and work is two-thirds finished on a state-of-the-art $12 million sound stage in the Wellington suburb of Miramar. [More]

Open Air Concert in San Diego

Mirabella in San Diego writes: I was at my local library and saw a big poster for the following: The Port of San Diego is sponsoring a free public concert by the National City Community Concert Band to present "Music from Stage & Screen" at Pepper Park in National City. They will feature music from West Side Story, Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean, and other movies and musicals. The concert will take place on Sunday, August 8, at 6PM. The Museum of Science's new exhibit about the making of the ''Lord of the Rings" movie trilogy pulls back the curtain to expose the realities of director Peter Jackson's fantasy filmmaking. But it was the fans' fantasies that reigned at the exhibit's midnight opening yesterday where many of the hundreds of dedicated ''Rings" followers -- many who had come from across the United States and from other countries -- were dressed as hobbits and elves, displaying their affection for wizardry of all kinds. A good chorus needs to be versed in French, German and Italian diction. Occasionally Spanish, Russian and Czech come into play. But Elvish and Dwarvish? This weekend, local singers will have to master those languages and more as the Pittsburgh Symphony performs "The Lord of the Rings Symphony" under the direction of composer Howard Shore. It's a six-movement work for orchestra, soloists and choruses comprising music he wrote for Peter Jackson's acclaimed film version of J.R.R. Tolkien's 'Rings' trilogy. [More]

Writing in the Guardian in August 1954, shortly after the publication of The Fellowship of the Ring on 29 July, Herbert Dingle praised Tolkien's "largess". "To have created so enthralling an epic-romance, with its own mythology, with such diversity of scene and character, such imaginative largess in invention and description, and such supernatural meaning underlying the wealth of incident is a most remarkable feat." Symphony orchestras don't often face such strong demand that they have to add extra concert dates. But that's what's been happening when orchestras present the symphonic arrangement of Howard Shore's music for "The Lord of the Rings" film trilogy. Fellowship of the Ring turns 50!

An American edition from Houghton-Mifflin followed in October, 1954. Bell & Parke Join Jackson's King Kong

According to The Hollywood Reporter Jamie Bell (If I am not mistaken best known for his part in 'Billy Elliot') and Evan Parke ('Planet of the Apes') have joined the cast for Jackson's King Kong. Bell is set to play a young cameraman while Parke will play the first mate of 'The Venture', the boat sailing towards Skull Island. [More]
